I come from a Raptor which is “king of the hill”. I now have a 17 4x4 sport. Added rear locker.

As as far as what a “stock” f150 can do, there are several factors. Most importantly is type of terrain. Is it sand? Rocky? Snow? Streams? You need ground clearance and tires with grip.

Stock we have around 9.5 inches of ground clearance with our 31 inch factory tires. For every 2 inches in tire size, we gain 1 inch of clearance. So by bumping up to 35s(4 inches of tire gain, our ground clearance now goes up to 11.5 inches which we can pretty much say is 1 foot.

Secindly the tires. 35 inch highway tires will offer you zero traction off road and you’ll be spinning. 35 inch at or MT will offer you an upgraded grip off roading

where the raptor wins is articulation and speed. The backing of the 2.5 shocks allows them to hit bumps and ruts at 60+ mph and not have to worry. There’s about 12 inches of travel. In most lifted or stock configurations, there’s only 6-8 inches of articulation and has to be at slower speeds. The limiting factory is shock diameter and upper control arm which will allow for more wheel travel.

As a basic answer to your question, our truck can do EVERYTHING a raptor can do, just at a slower speed. With minimum upgrades(tires, UCA, level) our trucks are very capable of handling everything we can throw at it. Just need to have a competent driver.

newer traction control systems in Ford trucks (2011 and newer) have a great feature that will apply brakes to free spinning tires in order to "fool" the differential into sending power to tires with traction (it basically defeats the open diff). Its pretty cool to see in action but even without the locker you should be able to keep 4 wheels turning (albeit maybe not at the same time)... and yes this system is active even when you "turn off" traction control. The reason I bring this up is because its awesome... cheers

mostly anything at slower speed, that you won't sink in. only solution to that is bigger wider tires. Unbolting the sway bar links and tieing everything in place out of the way will do wonders for traction and make the ride a whole lot better.
I'm not so sure about the traction control locking up the breaks on front the spinning side. I have a 2012 Lariat and i got stuck in a slippery off camber situation. My diff was locked and both rear wheels were spinning. Only the wheel with no traction would spin no matter if the traction control was on or off and no matter how fast or slow I spun the wheel. I would have gotten unstuck if I would have had a locking front diff.
Diff lock is a definate bonus as 2 wheel drive with a diff lock is better than a 4WD without diff lock in almost all situation other than perfectly flat ground with mud or snow.

I've done PINS twice in a stock 100 series Land Cruiser, with open diffs and mild AT tires. Your truck will have no problems with getting stuck, but flat tires are a very real possibility. There are a ton of busted pallets and other trash littering the beach and half buried in the sand. If at all possible, carry an extra spare tire and don't go without at least one extra vehicle. Cell reception is non existent on the beach and spotty at the top of the dunes. It's worth the trip...

Great info, thanks! I'm currently on brand new Cooper Discoverer AT3's 275/60-20. They look like they'd be decent on sand, although not as wide as probably preferable for sand. I'd try to air them down, but I'm limited on how much I can do that with 20's I think.

I'm thinking I need to connect w/ my Jeep driving cousin and do this trip. He has a Jeep running 35's or maybe 37's. I have a ton more power than him (5.0L), but he has the maneuverability and the Dana 44's front and rear. Would also need to dig out a CB radio I guess.

You shouldn't need to air down. I didn't have to. I carry a CO2 system, just in case, can but haven't needed it. Like I said, cut tires are the real danger. You definitely want another vehicle, because it is very remote and you never know what might happen. Dead battery, blown coolant line, lock your keys in the truck, etc.

Always air down in sand and take it easy. Every vehicle stuck had not aired down!!!!
I had a blast in my Tundra - even having more in da ford!
*The locking rear diff rocks!!

I wish there was an electric or air locker for the front as well, but I don't off-road enough to even remotely justify that expense if it even existed.

I personally think you wont need it once you play around with the rear locked, I was very impressed and going several miles down the beach in 2wd with it locked ( I thought I was already in 4wd) until I stopped and then it started to dig itself in the sand I was like oh crap, then I saw I was in 2wd with diff locked. Very impressed how far I got in 2wd, then I remember having a hard time turning * DING!!! That rear diff locked makes it very difficult to turn in lose ground, imaging front locked too!
I bet your 5.0 sounds good with the flow master! Co worker had an 2014 single cab 5.0 with the Borla ATAK, wow sex to my ears!!!!!!

Thanks! Yes, I love the sound of the Flowmaster. There are a lot of haters who have been convinced by other exhaust companies that chambered mufflers are bad, but I happen to disagree and I've had many years and many miles of enjoyment out of Flowmasters on American V8's. I hate to admit that the engine sound is the primary reason for my choice of a 5.0L over a 3.5EB
