Default 4x4 Noob, F150 Noob, Need some advice

Hey All,

So my 2000 F150 XL 4x4 5.4L SuperCab Shortbox is my first 4x4 and my first full size truck. I am looking to make it our *get through anything* vehicle. I live in the country in Canada so I have snow every year, and its generally too much for my Dads Honda to handle.

I have bigger tires, 285-75-16 Bridgestone Duelers, already. I would like to know what else would be worth doing to the truck to keep me getting to work, even when the snow is deep. I also want it to be fun to play in the mud with. No major trail crawling, just going out and bombing around the hay fields.

So where do I start, what should I consider, what should be avoided.

Thanks.

Tires are a big deal. They can be some of the best money you can spend on your Truck. You can have 4x4 and lockers but if you have no tread or the wrong kind of tires, then a 2x4 with the right tires will do better then your 4x4. People seem to cheep out when it comes to tires, but they affect the way you vehicle performs on and off road dramatically.

An article I found about lockers hope it helps

A locker is a positive traction unit that supplies traction to both wheels. Your front end is open, not posi.

tires, lockers, lift (depending on tire size), and a winch for those times when you do get stuck. You can pretty much go wherever you want at that point

Good tires, Locker in the rear and a winch will take you pretty much anywhere you want to go. Anymore than that you better be expecting damage.

if you really want to go anywhere, Id vote rear locker, mid travel or long travel suspension, and a winch. don't lift your truck, do it right and go mid or long travel.

just put a level kit 2 inch or 3 inch and leave everything elts stock, all u need is clearance and preferably mud terrain or even just A/T, if your going through harsher conditions where you need more than a level kit (lifted) and you need more lights be prepared to spend a lot of cash, and sacrifice your nice smooth road driving, basically if its a daily driver don't use it as a hard core off-road truck
