Default Always best to do it the right way...

You really must look at the current rating of the switch you're using to make sure it's appropriate for the current the lights will draw (the load). I highly recommend using a relay as others have suggested. Hella makes a lot of great relays in many different configurations up to 70 Amps. As an electrical engineer I can tell you that it is best to let the relay handle the current, that's what they're for. Don't bother running a fuse between the switch and the relay. Use the fuse between the relay and the load (lights).
