2 or 4 WD?

Goodgirls813 07-14-2008 04:55 AM

I bought my 2004 2WD used from ford with a leveling kit already on it still under manufactuers warranty. "Certified used" you think they would have picked up that the previous owner had put the leveling kit on it. I don't think it would void it but that's my opinion.

first of all, legally, they canot void your warranty. secondly if somehting goes wrong and you need warranty work it has to be proven that what you did, mod, was the thing that caused the problem.

for example if your engine motor mount breaks, hey cant just say your warranty is voided due to you leveling your truck.. it has to be proven that the level kit broke the mount. this statement is just for example sake.

You have brought up a good question though, as i am wondering if by lowering the back end of the truck if that is going to throw the front end out of alingment or put a different angle on the ball joints. sounds crazy but if you dont know you just dont know.

As long as you only lower the rear level with the front I would think there would be no alignment issue.

I had one installed by my dealer after I bought my truck and it was a supposed 2.5'' (more like a 3'') and the Mgr. said there was no warranty issues.

that is what i was thinking but just not sure. I still cant make up my mind if i want to raise the front or lower the rear. I am leaning towards lowering the rear just because id like to get rid of some of the space in the fender well.

I guess one thing i am not sure of is what are the shims for in the shackle kit?

Just call me Sean 07-22-2008 02:36 PM

The shims are for correcting the pinion angle.

Have never messed with rear ends before, i do understand what they (shims) are for now but can an average person prob figure this out? Is it just going by looks of the pinion angle or is there measurements invovled?

appreciate the info.

You can do it yourself with the proper tool. I think it's called an angle finder. It measures the angle of the driveshaft or any angle you want to measure. I believe the angle at the transmission and the angle at the rear end must be the same. There may be an acceptable amount of difference between the two, but I'm not sure. I am no expert in this field so you may want to check with an expert or at least someone who can give you more definite answers. You also have to make sure that the driveshaft doesn't bind at full suspension droop due to lack of clearance for the u-joints.

awesome... looks like i should be able to get the kit in about 2 weeks and a twelve pack and have some fun.

tyler17 08-24-2008 12:05 AM

you should be ok

UJSLOST 09-06-2008 07:45 PM

pinion angle is the total angle of the trans yoke and the rear yoke. I believe that is correct.

You can do a search but I think that is correct from setting the pinion angle on my mustang. Which was set to like -3 or -4 so that when I launch the car it should come up to 0.

i dont think u even ned to level it i had 32s on my stock and i put the leveling kit on looks like i can fit 35s

Doing a leveling kit should not void your warranty. Unfortunately it is up to the individual dealership as to whether they want to cover it.

Rainman, you will be able to clear 33x12.50 by doing a 2.5" leveling kit. You may be able to put 33x12.50s on at the stock height but they will rub while turning and/or flexing.

i just bought an 08 f150 fx2 i only have 5k miles on it and i just put a djm lowering kit 3.5 in front 5.0 in rear ive taken it in 2 times for tranny problems before putting in the lowering kit,now i have a tranny leak and tomorow im taking it in the ford dealer with the lowering kit install.now i talked to a friend at another ford dealer and he said a lowering kit will not void your warranty unless you have a problem that the lowering kit developed but since the lowering in basically suspension it would void you suspension warranty ,but some lowering kit do need driveshaft angle adjustments or it will cause a vibration
