Default hubs grinding?

I drive a 2004 f150 new body stlye fx4 recently i was driving on the highway and i heard a grinding noise coming from the front end at first it sounded like it was on the driver side then it switched to the right as i slowed down... when i came to a stop the truck felt like it shifted itsel into 4 wheel drive and gave a hard jolt. since that day it has happened several times and i i shift it into 4hi it stops the grinding. It doesnt make the truck shake or anything just sounds like its grinding. Any ideas as to what it is?

Have you checked the drive train components? Sounds like it could be a bad drive shaft or axle resonating the sound to other areas. Does it only happen at certain speeds? Have you been off road lately?

ill say it again, your IWE solenoid needs to be replaced, and hopefully that is all. it is that or there is a leak in the vacuum lines, which is how the 4x4 is engaged. please have it checked before you need new hubs and actuators.
