Waiting for updates on this thread. We will be there in late October and plan to do some trails in my truck. I would like to hear which trails are fun, but not too scary for the wife.

Here's a pretty good resource for trail info (not just Colorado, but mostly):
www.traildamage.com
Here's a interesting forum: www.colorado4x4.org
An SCab Raptor just went over Black Bear a couple of months ago. He said it was way beyond his comfort level, and he had lots of help. Wouldn't do it again. FWIW, "Long wheelbase" on Black Bear is considered anything over 108".
If you want to see some overlanding, my wife and I did most what these guys did last year, only kind of in reverse (no Arctic Ocean)
Episodes 2-12 Alaska/Yukon April 2014. Amazing scenery! We did it in September: http://www.xoverland.com/portfolio/
They're doing Central America this year. They're on Episode 8 now.
There is also a "short" about Imogene Pass IIRC (one we are definitely doing!)
Enjoy!

I never got the chance to make the trip. My other half couldn't get shifts moved around at the fire department and the hospital so it just wasn't able to happen. Still hoping to make something happen in the next month or so before they start to close the trails for the year but if we don't make it, next summer it's happening.

Did anyone make the trip? I'll be headed that way on the 17th. Any updates? I'm thinking of taking Hermosa creek road and Ophir pass for sure, and maybe Lime creek road. Any other suggestions for a first timer?

Just got home a few hours ago...
As far as "easy" trails go, my wife drove Corkscrew Gulch, Hurricane Pass and California Gulch (all the way to Animas Forks) with me in the passenger seat. That was her first time really off-roading. Freaked her out a little in some spots, but she did just find. And that was in a 145" wheelbase truck! And much of it in 2wd.
I drove the Imogene Pass and Engineer Pass. What a blast! But it was really nippy at the summits, and that was 2 weeks ago. FYI

Finally made it at the end of October. Snow closed most of the passes a week before we got there, so we didn't get to do the trails we had planned for. We found La Plata canyon road in Hesperus and made it to 11,600 feet. Definitely planning a return trip!

Hi gents!
I'll be in Durango on the 24th of this month, leaving on the 30th to head back to Houston. Last year, I ended up having my gallbladder out 3 days before we were scheduled to head out. I gave it everything I had, but I couldn't even get the luggage out of the front door, much less drive for 16 hours and then bump my *** up and down the trails. I was just hurting to dang much to go through with it so I threw the towel in while trying to pack the truck, popped a pill and went back to sleep.
Has anyone been up there this year? I know that they had a lot of late snowfall, just curious to know what the current conditions are like. My truck is still mainly "stock." 2" Pro Comp level and I'm still running the terra graps which have been excellent thus far. After doing some reading, Kennebec Pass is on the agenda for this year as well.

Any recommended "easy" trails closer to Durango with a basically stock F150 4x4 (1.75" Bilstein Lift)?
We towing our travel trailer with the F150 and want to avoid anything too crazy that might get us into trouble, mostly just looking ofr dirt roads with great views.
