Not to be overlooked is the lateral stresses put on the threaded part of the ball, never designed for such stresses. They have been known to get sheered right off in a tug (******) situation. Just plain stupid... but not as stupid as using a chain.

Then, as Sigma Pi stated, you had crap for a pin. We've used the hitch pin recovering a 3/4 Fiat (Dodge) stuck to its underbelly in thick gooey mud being tugged out by a D9. No damage whatsoever.

Hey guys. Sorry to bring back an older post. Trying to decide on which recovery strap to buy. I see that the strap should be rated for 2-3 times the weight of what you're pulling. My truck along with the majority of anything I might be pulling is just shy of 6k. So logic would say the arb 17,500 strap would be plenty. But I'm wondering if I should go with the heavier 24,000 strap for the off chance I have to pull a larger load. Would the heavier strap be overkill for the standard half ton pick up? Or would I be ok to stick with it and have the extra capacity should the occasion arise. Thanks!

I would go for the heavier strap because if you have to get running start at the recovery (snatching) it is nice to have all the buffer you can get. Look into kinetic ropes as well. More effective for recovery and easier on vehicles. Downside is cost. They are more expensive. Just my $.02
