Default Am i using the ELD correctly???

Im sure, like every other topic we can concoct concerning our beloved trucks that this one has been beat to death as well. That said, i am horrible at digging around for answers on forums, so here's to my first thread as a ford owner!

My Pickup is a 2013 F-150 crew cab 2x4 5.0 with a 3:31ELD

Recently i was using a small, self loading, round bale trailer to move some hay from a wet pasture. The pasture was soggy enough that the others helping me would not pull their big Cummins 4x4s off the hardball road. Being a new Ford owner i wanted to see what "built Ford tough" was all about.

In an effort to gain some confidence with my new truck i decided to take it through the paces. first i entered the soupy pasture without TC disengaged and all seemed fine UNTIL the tires spun, advanced trac kicked in, de-fuled the engine and i left me hung up. next i engaged the ELD and held down the TC button to turn off everything (I have read the owners Manuel).

Here's where i was let down by the ELD. Considerable throttle was required to get a waterlogged round bale moving in deep mud, so much so that EVEN WITH TC TURNED OFF, THE TRUCK STILL LOST POWER AS IF I NEVER TURNED OFF TC. So i switched the locker to the off position and hit the throttle, the limited slip kicked in and the truck screamed, shot a big beautiful double rooster tail of grass and black mud into the air and off we went truck trailer and round bale out of the pasture and back on the road.

SO it got me wondering... I understand that the ELD disengages at 25 MPH or if over 50% of the throttle is pressed which is why it did what it did, BUT it seems like a useless feature considering that the truck also has limited slip and performs wonderfully without it.

So what is the ELD suited for because its certantly not worth a DA&m in the mud.

I is another level. For me, with 4X4. When I go off-road I turn off my traction control (if the conditions are wet/muddy). If you don't then the tires tend to spin and then it distributes power to the other side and it just doesn't ride nice. Now, I am talking about being in 2-wheel drive at this time. Now, if it gets worse and I stop moving, then I put it into 4-wheel, but leave the ELD disengaged. My next level is if I get ready to go through something really bad or deep, or I stop moving in this mode, then I pull out my ELD and engage that bad boy. So far I haven't had to use that except for one time in the stuff I go through. That is with having the truck to the boards more than once.

My truck does stupid things like this too. My tire spin has been on dry pavement but the surface doesn't matter. The locker in it's stock form is pretty limited to what it can actually help you with. If you are doing a slow crawl up a slippery surface it will probably aid you but any situation of any real wheelspin it dies anyhow.

One thing I noticed is shutting down the trailer sway control helps lessen the stupidity of the traction control system a bit. Even so though...... I can light the tires from a dead stop, locker on or off and by maybe 25 mph the advancetrack steps in and shuts the truck down anyway. Unfortunately that's how the system works in it's stock form so you get what you get. Mine is so bad it basically will not allow wheelspin of any kind without trying to kill the truck..... this is holding the button until I get the Advancetrack disabled and the sway control off. Then I get mad.... pull fuse 36 in the underhood fuse center and blow... well only one tire off lol.

Your "limited slip" is your abs pulsing your rear brakes. You have no mechanical limited slip in the E locker trucks..... just an open diff unless you lock it with the dash switch which just kicks a solenoid on in the rear end. I am going to bypass my trucks TCCM ( Transfer Case Control Module) and just lock the rear end whenever I so please...... couple that with a switch on fuse 36 so to shut all nannies off via disabling the ABS system and low and behold...... it will drive like a normal pickup truck lol. 95% of the time I can leave it all intact as is stock and I am fine with it...... but if I want to do what I feel like I don't want the truck itself shutting it down because Ford decided we don't need a true off switch.

From what i understand, the 4x4s work a little different with the ELD than the 2x4 models but im not 100% sure if thats true. Also in my OP i used "limited slip" which i know now is a mistake.

I always pull the fuse if im going to do any real off roading. The locker is pretty much useless with the stupid stability control feature on the truck. If memory serves me correct even when you switch it off by the button it will still kick on if the truck feels you have reached a certain point that it needs to step in. The only thing that the e locker as done for me in a muddy situation is get me more stuck then I was.
