So think i'm going with Raptor wheels (stock 17") and getting some good winter tires for them.
What width of tire should i be looking at to fit these? thinking 285/70/17?

I'm in the same boat Tandem, thanks for doing some legwork for me, I'm looking for some snowshoes for my ride as well. I read that MotorTread article; I thought it was very strange because I don't think ANYONE prefers Goodyears snows over a Blizzak. Turns out the Blizzak model they "tested" against (the W965) is the oldest, least technologically advanced snow tire Bridgestone makes; kinda an apples vs. old, rotten apples sort or test, haha. I'm sure if they tested it against the Blizzak DM-V1 (the gold standard) their tire would end up where it always does: ranked lower than the Blizzak. Anyway, rant over haha.
Did you decide on a tire? I'm between the Blizzak DM-V1 ($320) or the Hankook I*Pike RW11 ($255) both from my local shop. Can't decide if the $$$ saved would be worth it. Like I said, the Blizzak is the gold standard, but I also do a ton of highway driving in southern Ontario where the highways are often bare. Kinda concerned about wearing out a nice, pricey winter tire like that, which is why the I*Pike is still in the running for me...

TW, thanks for uncovering that detail about the Blizzak they "tested".
I've done nothing at all, partly because of the unusual stretch of sunshine we've been having here in Vancouver, and partly because I'm undecided, sort of.
The Blizzak if they wear fast probably are not the right tire for us. Aside from a few ski trips a winter, quite often we'll see no snow in the city or barely any. Sometimes we'll get snow melt and then ice though, and we do live atop a high hill in town, but even with the 4x2 station wagon I've always managed.
On the other hand, we don't do much highway driving in the winter at all, except for when we are likely to encounter snow somewhere along the way. Decisions decisions.

I live in a snow belt, so we get blasted every winter, but like I said, where I work, 2 hours south, there's often no snow on the roads. Last year I left my apartment on x-mas eve and I could still see my grass, I got to the house 2 hrs north and couldn't get up the driveway; it was filled in with 2 1/2 ft of snow, haha. So I'm kinda in a weird position; not sure what I want to do. Think I might go the route of the I*Pike this season and see how they fair with the amount of driving I do. Hopefully by the time I need to replace them my commuting miles will have dropped off big time.

I'm running studded 17" on my 07 (same stock size tire as the 09+)
stud are useless IMO, but I got them with the truck
You won't have any speedo difference as long as the outside diameter of the tire is the same as the stock one
275/55/20 are about the exact same as 275/65/18 and 265/70/17.
A nice calculator: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
My favorite winter tire have always been Yokohama.
Stock allseason or any M+S/mud tire are a piece a crap in the snow.
Maybe not bad in fresh fluffy snow but forget about it on packed snow or icy condition.
