Tire size/Gear ratio

Hi everyone,

I have been looking to buy a 2001-2003 F150 Supercrew.
I came across one where the owner listed tire size and gear ratio.
Most people don't include it.

He listed P225-70 R 17 and 3.73 gears.

I don't know the significance of this information.

Is this a good combination?

I will tow a 23' boat twice a year 20mi trip.
I will also tow a medium size trailor once a week 10 mi trip
The rest will be driving to work and running errans.

Thanks
Dexter

Stock is 265/70/17 so wtf with 225? This causes a 7% error in speedo reading. 3.73 comes with the 7700 gvw package for towing. The new tire size gives the truck an effective 3.99 ratio.

OOPS.

The tire size is P255-70R17.

I guess my question is, What difference would the 3.73 gear provide as compaired to the stock 3.53

Thanks

The 3.73 ratio gives you a higher pay load you can pull. I think it gives you another 1000 pounds or so. It's just a little easier to start moving. I switched from 3.55 to 4.56 w/stock tires. I just wanted some more performance with what I could tune out of the stock motor. As far as pulling what you want to you should have no problems unless the trans isn't up to snuff. I would have all the old fluid taken out and replaced along with a new filter.
