anything new on winter driving? looking at a set of these, i live in upstate NY so at least a few months a year i'll be dealing with winter roads

Wrangler RT/S 235/75R15
1st truck was a used 98 ranger 3.0 4x4 (sucked ***) with 29k miles and original wrangler rt/s tires. didn't replace til 90k. once got stuck in about 4" of crusty snow on a level unplowed driveway, embarrassing to say the least. i had to hear about it once a month for about 3 yrs from the guy that was with me at the time. but as far as road use/manners/mileage out of a tire i'd say that is exceptional. i dont think i ever rotated them, maybe once at like 80k

Cooper SST 285/70R17
2nd truck used 06 silverado crew cab 5.3 4x4 level & add-a-leaf, loved the mileage (19 hwy) hated the dinky 5' box. bought a set of used cupped as hell cooper sst 285/70r17 half tread for cheap. the only tire i've seen do better in snow is blizzaks. last december here in minnesota we had two huge snowfalls that all but shut down the city, i think the first one was about 18" with BAD drifts. i was out all night helping a friend shovel/snowblow 15 rental properties in minneapolis. there were cars, trucks, vans stuck on the streets and people would just leave em there. there was a couple times we thought she was done for, but then she'd hog right through. pretty loud on the highway though, louder than open country m/ts. cant comment on mileage, didnt have the truck long. but i was able to get the cup out, rotated every 6k

Mickey Thompson ATZ 285/65R18
current truck 09 f150 5.4 4x4 screw 6.5 box 2.5" level 3" rear block. got rid of those wrangler hp at 39k (SHOT). sold em with the chrome clad wheels for 350. got some 18" fx4 wheels and a slightly used set of mickey thompson atz 285/65r18. so far the atz's are OK, pretty loud for an a/t tire. just OK in snow. havent been offroad with them unless you count sliding off the road at work in a little slush, got out just fine though. these are just my winter setup.

Toyo Open Country M/T 35/12.50R20
Just borrow from a friend for about 3k miles. love the look, surprisingly quiet for a m/t, very little offroad experience but never had a problem when we did.

I changed them out due to decreased gas mileage so didn't get to test them in the snow. I went to Cooper Discoverer II and during a recent snow and ice storm they performed flawlessly for an all season tire.

I am running 285/70/17 Dick Cepek FC II. For an at they do well, gaps between the lugs clean out very well in mud. In snow they do better then i thought they would do for not being aggressive. In rain they kick out the odd time but over all i would suggest these tires to someone who wants a good on road tire and a decent offroad tire.

275/65-18 Goodyear Wrangler SR-A - Came stock on my fx4 but got swapped out after 7000km(4350 miles). Great on the highway, sucked anywhere else. Ok in the rain, could easily get the truck sideways with a little throttle. Almost got stuck in 4wd in some mud where my brother inlaw was going through in 2wd with his general grabber at2's. Would recomend for highway use ONLY lol.

275/65-18 Dunlop Rover Maxx traction - The tires that replaced my SR-A's. Slight highway hum but easily covered with an extra notch on the volume. Good on the highway. Not too bad in mud, better then the general grabber at2's. Good in snow, not the best on ice, but not the worst. Not too bad in the rain. Had them for 15,000km(9300 miles). Came with 18/32s tread and had 14/32s when I sold them. Would recomend them for a DD/weekend warrior.

275/65-18 General Grabber AT2 -Borrowed from my sister and brother inlaw (who i sold my dunlops too) while i waited till i had enough money to order my 35s. Good in snow and pretty good on ice. Not the best for mud. Good on the highway, very quiet. Not too bad in the rain. Would recomend for a more street used vehicle that sees winter.

325/65-18 BF Goodrich AT - Everyone seems to love this tire but it still has yet too please me... Bought it for my winter tire and was going to run a mud tire in the summer. These tires are horrible on ice (what i bought them for) but just ok in the snow(my dunlops did better). I wanted Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs cause I know lots of people that have a like them all year round in norther Manitoba, Canada but they were back ordered in the size I wanted. Havent tested them out in much mud yet cause the snow is still melting here (usually have snow till may). Thinking about just trading them in and getting something else. Seem to be really good on the highway though, quiet and seem like they will last really long. Would recomend them for a more street used vehicle that doesnt see much, if any, snow or ice.

Just replaced the stock 265/70/17 Michelin LT AT2s with the same size BFG A/T KOs. Mostly went with those because I've had them on my past 3 trucks and they are the best light truck AT there is. Excellent on wet roads, good on icy/slick roads, excellent in snow and very good in sandy areas ( I drive in the NJ Pine Barrens a lot). Great manners on dry roads also. I usually got about 70K miles out of the ones on my other trucks, so I'm hoping for about the same.

Worst tires I've owned: Goodyear Forteras by far! They were simply awful even on dry pavement, and wore so fast it made my head spin. Next was BFG Radial Longtrails. The slightest amount of rain or snow with make those things slide all over the place.

I was a little disappointed in my BF's AT KO's. Got about 55k out of them. Too much highway running I guess. Going to try Nitto Terra Grapplers next or General Grabber AT2. Half the price too.

Don't do any serious off-roading, and I agree on the Scorpion's. Have 38,700 on mine, rotate every oil change - excellent tires. Should get another 3-4k out of them, then another set.

Do pretty good in snow and well in rain. Quiet, handle well.

I had a set of Toyo 285/50r22 and had great even wear and handled mud with no problems. Very quite for an All terrain open country tire. Great handling on the HWY and in town. Great towing tire. The wear was very even on all tires.
But I did have a huge problem on my 2nd set of Toyo Open Country 285/50r22's on my 2008 f150 4x4. I had a major problem with the "No Regret Guarantee". The dealer put different sizes on my truck and told me that it would run a lot better (he was an EDUCATED TOYO dealer so I believed him).
I was replacing my Toyo Open Country A/T 285/50R22 with the same brand and tire.
Dealer put on 305/45/R22's. (dealer replaced my 10-ply with a no-ply type) Toyo has the "No Regret Guarantee" at their authorized dealers. 45 days/500 miles..refund or replacement. I wanted my ride back but Toyo said they could not MAKE the dealer honor the advertising and it was quite common that smaller specialty shops would not honor their guarantee and there was not anything they could do.

? A billion dollar Toyo company cannot make an authorized dealer (with a few employees) follow the agreement? If I ran into problems down the road any tire warranty issues would be a problem.

Let me sum it up quickly..even though I like the wear and ride and quality of my tires..what good is it if ANYTHING went wrong with the tires and it was a warranty issue? Experience has taught me that it will cost me more than it should. Go with a tire that has a good reputation along with quality and ride.

Because Toyo could not hold its dealers accountable to its advertised warranty/guarantee it ended up costing me $2150 for the set when it would have cost $1850 had the original dealer honored it. Paying $300 more than a set is worth is a lot of money in this economy...

I am reading posts about tires and wish I would have read this thread before I purchased. I will read all through the forums before I ever do anything with my 4x4 truck...

I would add that this new set of Toyo's are much quieter than my previous set for some strange reason.

Currently have the Nitto Trail Grappler. Love the look but not the noise. Was thinking about switching to the Mickey Thompson ATZ All Terrain?? I want the aggressive look but not the noise. Anyone have the ATZ? I'm interested in your opinion.
