help me choose an all terrain tire
truck is a 2017 xlt screw, LB, max tow, 4x, with 3.5 eco. I want an AT tire. I’ve got the stock good year HT on sport rims now. I was thinking of going 285/75r18 and going with a cooper at3, or Toyo open country at. I know that size is about a 35” tire. But now I’m thinking of maybe going 275/70r18, which is 33.4 in both tire sizes. Reason I’m conflicted is I have some friends who do serious off roading. Some say get the 33” because that’s all I’ll need and it will give me more room for articulation in the wheel wells. Some say get the 35” because it will give me more ground clearance and I can always air down for more room in wheel well. The truck will not really see trails much, but will see sand, and hopefully see it often. I know both tires sizes are e rated 10plys, but the smaller 33s are about $100 cheaper per tire. So I’m looking for some feedback here to see what other have done. Thanks for your time and help. Also, not looking to buy now, but doing research so when the time comes I’m ready.

I did a Ready Lift 2.25" level W/ 275/70/18 BFGs.
Some before and after pics
With the sand I think the wider tire would be better for flotation.
Be sure to post some pics when you decide and get em on the truck

I second the BFG’s. Trusted, tested and they last. I had a set on my old work truck...Tacoma, believe it or not but those things gave me 75k miles. And that’s rarely rotating and running proper psi(I know...it was a work truck) I never had an issue with them and handled well in wet conditions. I didn’t do a whole lot of off-roading but the times I did, they surprised me for AT.

I have the 35x12.50x20 Toyo Open Country R/T (a cross bw the A/T and the M/T), and I love them. They are surprisingly smooth and quiet on the road, and they pull really well off-road. I also think they look great. I don't have any experience with the A/T's, but I'm sure they are as good or better on the road.

Define serious... because my definition of serious off-roading consists of modded compact pickups that are crawling rocks (because full-sizers aren't anywhere near as capable for that). AT tires are not the application for "serious" off-roading.

By serous off-road I mean older box style Jeep Cherokees, wranglers, and a few Suzuki sidekicks. Most have roll cages on outside as well for roll-overs.
My truck will not be a serious off roader. It’s way too heavy and long for that. I want something that I can hit the occasional trail, nothing serious, hit trails up in the desert, and occasional off-road parks. It will spend 90% of its life on pavement. A couple of my dudes have suggested the same tire to me. The Cooper discovery AT3. I’m looking at 285/75r18. Which has a diameter of 34.8” and a width 11.2”. My dudes told me a 12.5 wide trie would be ideal, but not at all necessary for my needs and by sticking with a less wide tire, it should net better mpg. But I also didn’t buy this truck because it got great gas mileage. I’m also checking out Toyo open country at2. The ko2 by bfg is a good tire, but they don’t make it in the size I’m looking for. I’m also thinking about a 295/70. It’s a 1/2” shorter but 4/10” wider and also cheaper.

I just realized that everyone that has mentioned the KO2 as being the best tire is 50 year old or older.
Nothing wrong with that. But it seems to be the tire of choice for a specific generation. All my friends in their 30s all mention Toyo, Nitto, and Cooper. Hmm...
