Sorry you had to learn the hard way. Good luck with your claim. Costco will probably come through for you, eventually.
As a layman, is there any quick and dirty way to tell this?

The head rides about 2" in from the outer edge of the rim, and in a constant circle of course. I know where the head rides as local Ford dealer damaged all 4 of my rims putting on snow tires; had a circle on all 4 rims in the exact same spot. Ford bought me a new set of rims, said the tire changer head should have been replaced sooner than later.

Here's the reality of this thread- these rims are beat to hell / have some serious gouges in them with rust. MAYBE the tire shop did something, but the majority of the damage is from normal driving.

I have no idea what machine costco uses but i would bet with the volume they do they will be using some sort of touchless machine so i doubt that was the cause here and that one big gouge is almost near the center of the rim so even if they did have some cheap machine i cant see it causing damage to the center of the rim.

Can't remove tires without 'touching' the wheel. You have the jaws that clamp down on the outside of the wheel to lock it down, and of course the lock ring and bed it sits on. This of course is in addition to the spoon to break the bead and the shoe/cover I mentioned before that peels the tire off the wheel. It doesn't rest against the wheel, but they're supposed to keep a fresh (nylon/plastic) cover on it because they do end up making contact
Mind you if done properly and with the correct parts/covers there's NO damage or scratches. If they blow through a lot of installs and have no pride in their work(and/or the shop itself doesn't ) then they might not keep the protective shoes/covers rotated, and treat people's wheels like a UPS driver at xmas time.
You're exactly right that there SHOULDN'T be any damage to the inside of the wheel(there shouldn't be any damage ANYwhere), but if they treated them like the gorilla in the old Samsonite commercial, then it's really easy to do damage.
My only point is/was that it IS possible, and that the damage shown in the pics COULD happen if the installer/shop is careless enough.
I have no idea if THIS shop cause THAT damage

Exactly.

Not sure what the previous poster was talking about “old damage” and “rust.” There is no rust and Costco did all the damage pictured.

Regarding the “gouge,” a friend who is an operations manager for a large chain of car dealerships believes that the shop dropped the wheel on something that gouged it.

Default Update

Update:

I’m happy to report that after providing Gallagher Bassett, the company Costco uses to address claims, with an estimate from Ford for the cost of four new wheels, the six
lug nuts they trashed, plus labor, they are sending me a check for the entire amount.

Nice to see them doing the right thing.

Congrats man.
I think I'd still use someone else this time around though

Gallagher Bassett refused to pay for the damaged that costco did to my rims. The exact same thing and they said that Costco DIDNT do the damage. They told me the chrome just peels off when they take the tires off. Unreal and unacceptable. The only place my truck has ever been is Ford other than this one instance and my rims were in excellent condition. I will ONLY take my vehicle to a dealer from now on.
