Cooper ST MAXX review thread
Cooper ST MAXX 265/75/16 E load range
Ok. since there are very few reviews on this tire i will start a thread. Just got them in stalled today. I chose these tires because they have the kevlar sidewall and a cut and chip resistant tread compound. Cooper's are made in the USA and this tire is the equivilant to the Good Year MTR kevlar at a cheaper price. Right now Cooper has a $60 dollar rebate on a set of 4 tires. I chose 265/75/16 to gain some clearance over my old 245's. I will primarily be driving highway/gravel roads/dirt pack. Out the door i payed $989 with warranty. It has 7 tread plys and 3 sidewall plys.
Low road noise at highway speeds
seems to soak up the expansion cracks and manhole covers
Truck sits noticeable higher
Lugs are chamfered and beveled to eject rocks and have very nice lug spacing.

- While watching my truck being pulled off the lift and parked in the store front, i though t"OMG those are some dang good lookin tires" haha

~ 50 miles of dirt/loose gravel this evening. the tires bite great in the loose gravel and are very stable in hard pack roads. they floated a little bit in deep silt but i could feel them grab when it got deep. Diving hard into loose corners proved no issue. they bit ground and pulled on through. Inflated to 50 psi.

Lowering tire pressure (50psi seems a bit high) will put more tread on the ground and give a smoother ride offroad...I have Cooper AT3's on my Jeep liberty CRD...Love Them.

Ok i have been slacking. regarding 50psi comments, this is the reccomended pressure from Cooper for this 10 ply tire on the highway. To low of pressures will start to result in cupping and un even wear. If i know i am going to the mountains, i usually drop to 35lbs once i get off pavement and air back up once i get to the little town just off the mountain. None the less i have taken numerous gravel roads and trails at 50psi and these tires grab like mad.
Coming up on 7000 miles since i bought them in July with 80% highway and 20% gravel/offroad. I took a long trip down to pueblo, co(~1400 miles round trip) and noticed my highway mileage did drop down to 18mpg from 20 with the old 245's. These tires do tend to lock on pavement if you have to slam on the brakes and it is really hot out (100+degrees) im sure it has to do with the silica compound in the tread. Overall i am highly impressed with them. They dont howl on pavement unless you are diving into a corner and have your windows down. They dig well in mud and the stone ejectors work great. After 7,000 miles i have noticed very little tread loss. I would expect 50,000 from these tires

You talked about this is cooper's equivilant to the goodyear. That statement is compleatly wrong. This tire is atleast 10 times better then any goodyear including there ones with kevlar.
Finaly I would also reccomend a lower pressure but they seem to be wearing fine and you are accustom to the ride so no need to mess with what works. If I had installed them i would not have put any more then 35 psi in them unless you tow and haul regularly. But again no need to change now since it is working well so far.

Yes, i do all my mileage by GPS. I agree with the goodyear statement. i know of some folks with the MTR's and they were gone treadwise in 30K. i was comparing them in tire type. 35psi seems a bit low for a 10 ply tire to me. ive seen to many blowouts from low pressure in the hot summers, and like you said im perfectly comfortable with 50psi. no need to change unless im hauling or towing.

Did you account for the fact that you actualy traveled much further with the larger tire? If you didn't then your milage didn't fall 2 mpg.
