22" rims on 2018 f150 Lariat 3.5L Ecoboost?
Hey all. I am looking to put 22" rims on my new truck but am concerned about performance of the truck. Total newbie, so any help would be greatly appreciated

Wheel size isn't going to change the performance unless of course you go with some ridiculously heavy wheel. Tire size is the issue.

As Scott91370 said, your tire size will dictate any performance loss.
Stock 22s come with 275/45 (32x11) tires. You can go up to a 305/45 (33x12) without any significant loss, and without modifying/trimming anything. 305/45 is 1" taller and 1" wider, so your speedometer will be 2mph low at 60mph and a slight drop (~0.5mpg) in fuel economy from the rolling resistance of the wider tire. Also, your onboard MPG calculator will not be accurate. Stick with SL/XL rated tires, and you likely won't even notice the difference. |
If you go 305/40/22 it will be wider, and diameter will still be the same. So then your MPG, odometer/speedometer won’t be inaccurate. Going with a slightly wider tire should not effect the mpg, even with the slight increase in rolling resistance. Another thing to to keep in mind is the after market 22s will more then likely weigh less or equal to the stock wheels (assuming you have the 18s or 20s). Watch closely the total weight, and diameter though. Unsprung weight is very important. Every extra pound you add to the rotating mass, is equivalent to 4 to 7lbs of body weight. (Have heard different estimates) some people don’t believe the whole thing about unsprung weight, but you can watch a back to back video of a stock auto mustang make about 20whp different because shaving 16lbs (per wheel) total of 32lbs (If I recall) |
