Default 16s vs. 17s

first off Ive got stock 275/60s on a 17 in. rim. My bro has 265/70s on a 16in. rim on his 06 tacoma. Im going to get 265/70s on my f150 before long and was wondering: Would my tire be bigger/taller than his? where exactly does the 60-70 number come from? is that from the middle of the wheel or off the top of the rim?

He has the prerunner v6 SR5 and Lookin at it once I get tires and my level in mine will be taller than his.

275/60R/17 = Size 29.99"
265/70R/16 = Size 30.61"
265/70R/17 = Size 31.61"

The two digit number is called the "aspect ratio". Not a 'specific length', this value describes the distance between the beads of the tire to the tread as compared to the cross-section width. This is viewed as a percentage value. (Example: P265/70R16 has an aspect ratio of 70% of 265mm or 185.5mm). Lower aspect ratios have a stiffer ride and increased control than a similar sized tire with a larger aspect ratio. But larger aspect ratios tend to be more absorbent and add to a smooth road ride.

ok i gotcha. its hard to decide from an excelent all around street tire thats quiet or a more agressive trail tire thats louder and may not perform well on the streets and wear out quickly

Where do you do most of your driving? Another thing to consider is some of these All terrain and Mud Terrain tires have a smaller tread life than a street tire. You can estimate between 30k to 40k miles on a set off road tires if you take care and rotate them every 5k-10k miles give or take.
