So, after a week of back and forth by email Phoenix cannot supply the trim for this in gloss clack to match my trucks interior, this is after them telling me they could and me ordering it, so I have cancelled my order and they refunded my money in full.
I am looking into the LinksWell product through my local audio dealer (at least they have a phone #)...stay tuned - http://www.linkswellinc.com/products/upcoming/test/

I have been looking for larger displays, without a huge amount of luck. I have two screens at the moment, the first of which is a 7” lilliput highbright. The cost was reasonable and it is supposed to be sunlight readable. For the time being I’m going to mount that in the dash and see how I like it. Ultimately I want a larger screen in dash, but the lilliput I can still retain afterwards (perhaps as a flip up monitor where the console on top of the dash is).
The second screen I have is a 10.1” high res screen I purchased off of Amazon on the cheap, but don’t hold out high hopes for. I haven’t been able to test it, as they neglected to include the driver board when shipping it to me, but I suspect that the glare is going to be too significant to be usable during the day. The other issue is that the 10” screens end up requiring a bit of customization for the parts, and seeing as I have be artistic ability of a 5 year old, I don’t think I can have something fabricated for it without spending a fair bit of money.
The reason I opted for the 10.1” at the time is because it is very difficult to find a screen between 8 and 9” that met my specs. Specifically high res, sunlight readable, and within dimensions where I can fit it in a dash kit without butchering it. The Tesla style screens, while very appealing to me, don’t seem worth it for what I’m doing (this is going in a 2011 f150xlt without nav. You end up having to communicate over the can to handle the climate control, and on top of that would need software to adjust it. Personally I like having physical controls that will work regardless of the state of the head unit, and seems like too much work, in addition to the custom fabrication.
I did see the Phoenix head unit (Tesla style isn’t available to me) and a few generic ones on amazon that look similar, but I very quickly got the impression these are Chinese android units which I don’t care for and would rather avoid.

With that said, if anyone knows of any reasonably priced horizontal bar lcd touch screens, that would be greatly appreciated. My though on this is I could mount it on the dash and use it for controlling the in dash screen (e.g selecting nav, radio, etc)

For myself, a few reasons. The biggest one being is that either of those devices are just not sufficient for what I will be using it for. There have been some pretty good builds using a tablet, but in general I think they don’t end up looking very good. I’m going for an oem look, at least with respect to what is in dash. Also I wanted a backup camera, which granted I could do though the rear view mirror, but with a tablet it would be more difficult. I really do like the idea of a Tesla style monitor, and would even be willing to put in the work to communicate through the can, but the fabrication part scares me off a bit. I guess one last thing to point out is it is easier to upgrade a car pc than a tablet should the need arise, especially if you have custom work done to mount the tablet.
