Default Sync compatible audio upgrade

Looking to upgrade to a custom head unit in my 2011 FX4 crew cab. The stock set up just dont have enough options for tuning the sound, and none for adjusting the stock sub sound. Has anyone put a aftermarket head unit in a truck like this with the sync system? Looking for something with the big LCD screen but is also compatible with the ford sync so i dont lose all my voice, and steering wheel controls, and what not. Does not have to be one of the fancy ones with GPS, but one that does not cost a whole pay check would be nice to. What does anyone suggest?

Depends on what you are willing to spend on the head unit?

Probably under 600 I found a lot of good ones for under that but I can't tell if any will work with sync that's my bigger problem

Kenwood unit with maestro but I'm guessing that's more than 600. If your looking for tuneability, why not leave the stock head unit and run a Rockford 3sixty.3 or a JBL ms8

You will need MS-FRD1 from Pac-Audio to maintain the Sync - Here's the link

You will need a SWI from Pac-Audio to maintain the steering wheel controls - Here is a link but the exact model will be determined by the head unit you choose.

I used the above parts to replace the H/U in my 2011 with Sync and it worked out quite nice.

I prefer Pioneer Head Units but wanted to keep things cheap in the beginning and bought a AVH-P1400DVD for $200.00. What I like about that unit is the sound control and shaping is identical to the most expensive model in the series. The controls it offers are everything you could ever need. I think the newer updated version is now a 1500?

Good luck with your decision. A good sound processor is a great choice as well and I am considering going back to the stock H/U in the future and then use a DSP. I'm getting old I like the look of stock.

Hi Spinner,
I'm kinda doing the same as the OP.
I have an 11 Lariat w SYNC and the non Sony 6 disc H/U

I want a new full screen H/U that runs "Advanced App Mode" for iPhone 4s & 5S,

Nav = Waze
Music = Pandora, iHeart, etc

so I'm looking to install either a Pioneer AVH-X3600BHS or the AVH-X4600BT
The only negative to the 4600 is the motorized screen (had a Sony XNV-770BT in my 2003 Screw and the screen would catch often going back up.

Anyway ...
It is truly amazing how expensive these two required adapters are.

I guess the MS-FRD1 is required even though the Pioneer does not display SYNC info ? I have the small display screen above the steering wheel, so not positive if am looking at the correct adapter cables or not.
Thanks for any reply.

Have you considered the Advent OE Navigation? That unit will allow you to keep all your stock controls i.e. the steering wheel controls, voice commands etc. It also has both Pandora and iHeart radio for the iPhone. Since you said you do not have the Sony system it is completely a "Plug and play" system.

You can get Maestro and harness for ~$200 and a refurb Kenwood DNX690 for pretty close to this range. The Maestro does SW controls too so you don't need2 interfaces.

These have to be the WORST reviewed stereos ever.
Personally, I'm not interested in sub standard equipment that is only sold on amazon or flea bay. I'll stick with leaders in the industry who will stand behind their products.
