I think it has something to do with frequencies... However, from my experience, it doesnt really matter which way the subs face...thats the nice thing about subs, you can put them in the trunk facing anyway you want and still hear them inside...Try that with a tweet and you will hear next to nothing...
Im sure logan will be along to chime in, from past experience, she is pretty knowledgeable when it comes to subs and audio. Dont take my word for it, but from what I gather thats how it works....

So to sum it up, depending on the range of your sub, that will justify to go with a down fire or up fire box...Thats my thoughts on it...Unless you are in a competition, i dont think it will make a huge difference...

Feel free to correct me...Always ready to learn something new :-)

he :P

but thanks for the kind words

basically the biggest difference is flexing, a downfire box will flex your vehicle alot less than any other type whether, port up sub up, port forward sub forward, they can be just as loud..only problem with them is making sure it dosnt hit the floor on full excursion.

the subs create pressure waves, resulting in your rear view mirror moving and so on, downfire boxes help decrease that

they can sound the same as regular boxes, just reducing "flex" and sometimes can be a bit more math intaled when it comes to building
