^^^ this is a very smart man. Also a reason why I lean on him for advise at times as well.

Ok so the audio shop took a multimeter to my sub and said it was shot. I bought my own today and tested it:

How does this determine that my sub is shot? Isn't it supposed to read that?

Anyways, here are the dimensions of my box:

i would be very leery of reusing that box. that is some real backyard crap there. they tried to flush mount the sub by taking down some of the material of the 1/2" mdf, which is the thinnest a box should ever be already, to less than half it's thickness. they then tried to make up for it by gluing blocks where the sub would be screwed in. couple that with the lack of knowledge of wiring they have displayed and honestly i would just start from scratch. you will have way less headaches down the road. you can get a sub and amp that are compatible, you can choose how wild or mild you make the system and you know the gear will work.

That MDF is definitely too thin. You can cut a circle out of MDF at least 2 inches wider than the original hole and cut out the subwoofer opening in that circle. Then cut the circle in half so you can fit it through the opening of the sub box (in two pieces) and secure the new reinforcing circle from underneath with some short screws and glue (it will be back into one piece on the inside).

Is that a downfiring box? They did not leave much clearance for the subwoofer to the floor. I would expect at least an inch to be safe. That is probably why they had to sink the sub in after the fact.

Your subwoofer is not shot. I think you are just measuring it's ohm load. "Complete lack of electrical resistance will mean that your coils are damaged. Any reading above 1.0 ohms indicates that the coils are not blown. Readings below 1.0 ohms, or readings that shift abruptly from one ohm to another are a strong indication that your coils are blown." You can also gently push on the cone and it should move freely without any binding or sticking.

So a shop told me my sub was good and sold me an amp. I connected everything and for about 10 seconds all was good although the subwoofer didn’t sound right, and the amp went into protection mode. I disconnected the sub, and it came out of protection mode, same with the original amp.

What are my next steps? A new subwoofer? One shop told me it’s shot, and another told me it was good.

Sounds like your sub isn't wired properly.

I connected the + to the + on the amp and - to -. Keep in mind when I put fuses in my original amp and wired the sub, it did the same thing where it worked for 4-5 seconds and then the amp went into protection mode. Same thing with the new amp.

Isn't your sub a dual voice coil sub? What does the impedance say on your multi meter when you connect it to your the leads on your enclosure?

3.0 ohms when I connect it directly to the sub.

I don't know of any 3 ohm subs. Sounds like you have a blown voicecoil.
