Need some Audio Advice.
I will come out and say it...I have no clue what is going on when it comes to car audio. Plus, I do not want to spend and arm and a leg on this either. With that said, I have turned to the forum to get some advice. I am wanting to keep my stock 6 disc, but just add some subs and/or speakers. Would this be wise? Or should I get a new cd player? I am thinking about two 10's or 12's? I just want a clean sound, with some nice bass. Would 10's or 12's be better? Is there a certain brand that is better than the other? Also, what type of amp would I need? And what about speaker boxes? Can I just buy a universal one to fit my truck, or would I be better off with a custom? I have a 2009 Screw XLT. Any information or input would be great.
Thanks,
Cole

Hi there.. So the car audio bug has bit you .. First off I'll let you know that I have 15 years of car audio experience .. I'm M.E.C.P certified which means I went through the " mobile electronics certification program" I have my master installer certification and have to renew it every year to stay up to date with the new automotive electrical systems that come out every year.. ThAt being said..
There is no problem in using your stock stereo along with aftermarket speakers and amps.. But if you want big bass under your seat it's really not gonna happen .. The only thong that is going to give you substantial bass out put is a blow thru . Where you cut the. Ab and bed of your truck and use a aper shell membrane to seal out the elements and build a large speaker box and place it in your bed so the bass will come thru.. Or you can put a " mtx thunderform enclosure with one ten under the rear seat.. It will give you bass but just enough to wake your system up ... Woooh! ... That was a mouth full.. Hope I can help ..

Overkill much?
He doesnt need to cut a hole in his cab to get decent base...
My mom has 2 10s crammed under her back seat in her 4 door. She uses a RF amp to power them and runs the signal to her factory radio with some aftermarket speakers also. It can be done easily.

I wanted a bit more out of my truck the volume just did not go high enough,,, so all I did was add a high level amp I keep the stock head unit, they are good stuff, and replace the speakers..I also added a single 12" sub,, ( SUBS ARE MONO YOU DONT NEED TO HAVE 2 OF THEM ) that made a world of difference.. I dont have much room with a regular cab but it now has the boom but I still have some room for tools and stuff behind my seat.

I don't think you can get much done with only $200 if you want 2 10" under the rear seat with good quality sound, you get what you pay for I guess.
This is what I have:
$170 Fox Box
$300 Kenwood Excelon XR-1S amplifier
$350 2 JL Audio 10W3v3
$ 50 Streetwires 4 gauge amplifier wiring kit
$400 Pioneer AVH-P4200 head unit
I did all the install myself, so that saved me a few bucks. Before this I never messed with stereos before and the outcome is awesome sound.

I dont have a set amount that can be spent, but i would like to keep it around 800-1k? If I can get a good set up for cheaper, that would be awesome. Like I said, I am not wanting something outragous. Just a good clean sound, with some bass that the neighbors can hear when I drive by...(Im sure the old man down the road will love that ).

Stock units w/ amps?
Can you add an amplifier and a sub to the stock head unit? I just bought my 2010 super crew and the XLT system sucks. But I remember I looked into this a long time ago for my new car then (1998), and most stock players don't have the pre-amp out needed. So that requires you to replace the head unit.
Is this true?
Also, the stock speakers have distortion when the volume is up and the bass hits. If you can install an amp with the stock head unit, is there a way to add a crossover too?
Thanks!
