Yeah you will be plenty happy with that setup it will sound a million times better than stock

I have one 10" polk in a supercrew box in my truck, sounds great very happy with the outcome.

Just bought a sheet of 3/4 mdf. Is this overkill for an 8"?

In most area's 3/4 is all the hardware stores carry. (True for around my area)

So, No. 3/4 is just fine. It makes for a sturdier box and easier to pre-drill and attach screws.
