Door speaker upgrade for 2012 f150 supercrew
Anyone have any recommendations on replacing the factory door speakers both front and rear.i don't want to replace the HU. would buying some aftermarket speakers improve the sound or would I need an amp to power them as we'll?...I already have a jl sub in the back with a jl mono amp and it sounds great, but it kinda overpowers the factory door speakers. Any help is appreciated.

I just replaced all 4 door speakers with Infinity Kappa 682.11cf (6x8). They are coax speakers and I left the stock tweeter in place and connected. I used the standard wiring and bought the Ford wiring connectors so I could leave the truck wiring stock. Got them from Crutchfield, about $280 for all 4. The install was super easy.
The new speakers def have more punch and overall sound better. I have the Sony system in my '13 Screw FX4, so the speakers I took out were not junk. This is the first time in my life that I've taken speakers out of a car and thought "Hey, I should give these to one of the neighbor kids."
So only an incremental improvement in the sound......
Driving them with an amp would help, I'm sure. I've thought about it, but at this point I am pretty happy and have a few mods that are higher on the priority list (line-x and maybe the AR Powerstep).
If you want a dramatic improvement, you may need an amp.

I just put in polk audio db6501 components up front and 5x7s in the back. I hooked them up to a jl audio 700/5 amp along with a 10" polk mm1040dvc sub.
I had the factory system (non-Sony) and the sound is vastly improved. Having tweeters up high improves highs tremendously and I can actually hear words in songs that before I didn't know what they said. The 6.5" woofers in the doors and 10" sub in back give me all the bass I need and want.
Install was relatively easy. Took me 2 1/2 days and a couple mornings around a couple hours each to complete. I installed dynamat on all four doors which is what the last couple days were spent doing.
I used the PAC harness and speaker harnesses to avoid cutting any ford harmess. Also, I used the factory door speaker wiring to avoid going through the molex plug.
Total setup was $950 mostly off amazon.

I would purchase a 6.5" component system for the front and leave the rear stock or do a basic upgrade. You can purchase adapters for your truck, pre made, from several different companies. add a basic 4 channel to power the components, leave the rear speakers on headunit power and call it a day.

I just picked these up, but still have to get them installed. Everything I've researched highly recommends using an amp in combo with aftermarket speakers to unlock their full potential. They both received great reviews. I'll let you know how they sound once in.....oh, and I'm keeping the stock HU and tweeters:

I spent a little more in the end, but the sound improvement.....all I can say is WOW. Even off of the stock HU, the Pioneers produce great highs and mids, while the sub takes care of the lows. Very happy with the outcome.
