it might not be the key but it definately helps. i use a table saw and a jig saw... maybe one day ill be able to buy somethin to do perfect holes (lol).

The reason the table saw helps so much is that you can get your cuts perfect and then when you put the box together, there are no gaps where two pieces of the wood connect. (gaps = sanding (if your good at it) or lots of caulk)

Having perfect seams means you have a much better chance of a perfect seal, with alot less caulk, and when you can see inside the box, that is a big deal.

However, you can make straight cuts just using a jig saw or a skill saw if you use a fence (but that takes a while)

I have a steel straight that I line up with a square, then clamp it to the wood when I try to cut something straight with a circular saw, but I was just wondering if it was that much better.

What do you use to hold it together? I helped make a full back seat box for a dodge Dakota with 4 10's and we used pl400 and wood screws, But I was wondering if there was anything better.

yea the steal straight is what i was referring to as a fence. It works just as well if you get it straight, but a table saw is much easier. But when i built that box i hadnt yet learned to appreciate taking time to get everything perfect and making every cut perfect. (sometimes i tried to do without the fence).

i just use wood screws, and caulk... im not real sure what is actually best, nor am i sure wat kind of caulk it is that i use, i have a couple of tubes of it at my parents house though, some time when i go up there i will look at it and pm u Ty.

NOTE: i tried to take apart one of my boxes one time, and with all of the screws out i couldn't get it apart without the 3/4" mdf ripping all apart. but i personally still wouldnt trust the caulk alone.

most boxes (high quality ones) will have liquid nails or something of that sort in between the mdf in order to prevent vibrations or anything coming loose even with all screws out

Do you have enough room when you fold the seats down. I don't know if your truck back seat is the same as mine but I know I would not have room for that in mine. I just folded the seats down and put my box on top.

I've built quite a few boxes in the past 10 years, the best material I've found is 3/4" particle board, use liquid nails in all the joints then screw it together. As far as a different look on the outside, I've seen someone coat the whole box in fiberglass, sand smooth and paint. Came out very glossy. Even with all the bass of 4 Kicker Competition 15"s never cracked the fiberglass! Another option for coating is a light layer of Bondo, then paint it.But with the fiberglass and sandpaper you can contour the outside of the box anyway you wanted. Recess the speakers and amp, or raise them up.
