But wouldn’t mind hearing your review of the SI Tweeter and Mids and see how they compared to your experience with Morel Virtus 3ways.

4C,

Do yourself a favor... any Morel 3-way system with the CDM600 mid will be a subpar choice. This mid is really a useless speaker in a car application, if you really want a great sounding system. Stick with a Morel 2 way system, or look elsewhere for a 3 way component set. I know.... who is this guy and what dies he think he knows? Here is what you really need to know... it will save you a lot of grief and wasted $$$, and after Dominic gets his SI components tuned, he'll be saying the same thing!
In a 3 way car application, the mid is a CRITICAL speaker. This is even more true if you are building a pillars or somehow otherwise locating the mid somewhere other than the door. Without going into too much detail, just look at the specs for the CDM600.

https://www.morelhifi.com/product/cdm600-midrange/

The Fs of this speaker is 550hz. Again, without too much detail, this speaker should have a crossover point above this spec. Of course, there is more to it than Fs....
Now take a look at what frequency range male and female voices utilize. Musical instruments as well. Go back to that crossover point.... playing only frequencies over 500hz (I understand crossover slopes, just trying to keep things simple), this mid just doesn't cut it in an automotive environment.
Again, there is more to it than this, but I'm just keeping things simple here. If you are planning on mounting the mid in the door with the woofer, you'll be fine with a 2 way component set up front.

I'm not bashing Morel, they make some great speakers. However, the CDM600 just isn't a great choice where we are working!

Ok, I’m all ears,

first what do you know and think of a three way SI or any set up with any SI component?

second, what would you suggest, can I put the Mids in the door of a three way system or is it a waste? Should I just brake the bank and do a custom A-pillar and put the mids with the tweets in the pillar?

third, what system would you suggest around the Morel price range, two or three way, after answering the above two questions first?

thanks,
vince

Vince,

First, just giving my opinion after playing around in car audio for 30 years....

From what I see (have yet to hear them), the SI sets look great on paper. I'll get to hear Dominic's soon enough....

Can you put the mids in the door... sure. However, at that point I'd just go with a 2-way component set. There are plenty of 2 way systems that sound great.... As for going the a-pillar route, that really depends on your goals and budget. Unless you are a really serious listener, I'd probably suggest going 2-way with a DSP. Decent components and a good tune will put you in a better listening environment than 95% of owners.

As for suggestions based on price, I'm not the expert. Dominic or others here can probably better assist. Listen to the few here that have knowledge, they'll steer you in the right direction. My build that is finally about to get started will utilize JL C7's, at least in the beginning.

I absolutely agree with Bo! As crucial as the mid is, I still don't understand why Morel chose what they did. Rule of thumb for crossover points is generally 1 1/2- 2 x the FS. So am I going to cross my mid at 1000 hz? Makes absolutely zero sense on Morels part. Their crossover specs do state 500hz at 12db slope (which is the below their stated FS???) but regardless, it's not low enough. Main reason why I am making the transition to the M3. It's a true mid.

That being said, like Bo said, go with a nice 2-way before you do any major surgery and see what you think. Plenty of SQ cars out there with 2-way configurations.

  • I also can't mount my amps until the sub box comes in so I can see what would be best on the amp rack of the sub box and what needs to go onto the back wall.
  • Power cable is run.
  • RCAs are run. I ran 6 just in case, even though I'll probably only need 4. While I'm at it, might as well.
I'll try to get some pics together today. Hope to have all of this finished in the next 2 weeks.

Brandon
I was hoping to see some pics. I just cracked my Stock Nav HU screen yesterday and have no intention of keeping that POS. I have read carstereochics blog. I am really curious to see how you made out with this project. I am still doing my research but will be starting this project as soon as the weather changes here in dirty jersey.
