2010 F150 econ sound upgrade
#11
Now on to the criticism. I'm totally happy with the way the type-r's sound. I have the attenuation at -6db and i find its just right for any style of music I listen to. The amp plays loud and clear without any issues (except for a high pitched whining noise when the vehicle has been sitting outside in freezing temps, no biggie I assume). The only component that lets me down is the sub. It sounds great, but tends to get a little sloppy at higher volumes and bottoms out during bass intensive songs at about 3/4 tilt. I can hear the vc slapping the back of the motor housing pretty loudly. That, and the fact that its in a sealed enclosure leads me to believe I need to revamp the bottom end of this system to get the best sq out of it. Since the sub and box cost me a mere 70$, I think a budget of 200$ to rework the lows is reasonable. Heres whats in store:
1x Digital Designs 1508
Ported Enclosure 1.00^ft 15.0 sq" vent x 23" long (recommended by DD)
Wired in 2 ohm to deliver 420 watts rms (currently at 4ohms 210 watts rms)
This should increase efficiency greatly and level out the system well. Should have this completed in a couple months, WILL post pics of this part! lol.
Edit: When winter ends I will also be looking into a speaker enclosure solution for the front components. I was able to take my passenger side woofer out of the door and mount it in a 6.5" enclosure I found in a junk pile in the garage and the woofer turns limitless. Apparently having no pressurization in the door decreases power handling greatly in the woofers. I just need to come up with a rigid design that will work with the alpine adapters (thinking fiberglass). If this works out I should be able to run full tilt without any distortion as the tweeters seem to handle the big cracks and hits fine but the woofers tend to get a little sloppy with lyrics and bass at high volumes. This should allow me to cross them at a lower frequency as well (currently @165hz 12/db).

This is just the post ive been looking for! I dont want to have to buy an expensive rockford fosgate 360.2 or something to make my system sound nice.
I bought 2 sets of Infinity Kappa 682.9CF 6x8's for my 4 doors.
But now you have me thinking maybe I should pick up a pair of those alpines you have.
The add an amp kit is a good idea. Do you find the head unit powers the rear speakers enough not to mess with the sound quality?
I would love to see some pictures of the installation. How easy is it to run the wires along the baseboard of the truck? I took up the carpet on my honda civic years ago and it never looked the same after.
Also, will that add an amp kit only work for 2 channels? Like Speakers + Sub. Or Speakers+Speakers?
Or would it be possible to add 4 Speakers and a Sub to that kit, with the right amplifier ofcoarse.
Looking forward to some pics and see how it turned out! Thx

Nice write up and looking forward to the pics. I love this idea as it allows us to keep the stock HU and retain all the sync features and makes the system sound great.

I just had a similar set up installed in my 2010 F150 Super Crew and it sounds amazing. I used the PAC OEM integration unit and the installer was actually really impressed at how easy it made his job (since it did not require any wire splicing). My final set up was:
Polk Audio 6.5" Components Up Front with tweeters mounted just by the door handle.
Infinity Reference 6" X 8" in the back.
4 Channel 50 Watts RMS X 4 Rockford Fosgate Amp
Infinity Basslink (used from my previous truck) with built in 200W RMS amp
Kept the OEM head unit and the sound is absolutely awesome. My co-worker has the same truck with the Sony premium sound system and mine just blows his away. I spent $400 on parts and $300 for the install. Had I opted to get the OEM Sony premium upgrade I would have paid twice the cost for a lesser set up. I will try to post some pictures later today.
