Default 12" Subs in '11 Super Crew

I would like to put a pair of 12s under the rear seat in my 2011. Would like to have a ported system, but I am not sure if I have enough room back there for a pair of Kicker's with a ported box. I asked one vendor, and they said they could not build a big enough box to fit under the seat and meet the air space requirements. What do you guys think? Am I trying to do something impossible, or is there a better sub that will work just as good with less air space requirements? I guess if I have to, I can switch to 10s, ported but not sure if I am going to get the sound I am looking for. Trying to get a pair of 43CWR122 to work. Suggestions?

Not enough space for a ported box especially if you don’t lift the seats.
Supercrewsound.com sells a dual 12” box. Get the normal depth one but you will need to use shallow mount subs (Comp RT’s). Also recommend the grills cuz you will be downfiring them and the kicker grills do good keeping the carpet off the subs. If you have a floor mat in the back get one that covers the whole floor and will go underneath the sub box. Alternatively you will need to cut the ones that only cover the foot area cuz they have a raised edge that blocks the sub air and it will flap in the wind. I ended up cutting mine and it’s good now.

good place to mount an amp is behind the rear seat on the bulkhead. Plenty of space.

Not enough airspace for full-sized subs. A shallow mount such as the JL Audio 13tw5v2 will fit nicely and doesn't require much airspace and doesn't need to be ported. Only .8 cubic feet per sub and they are 13.5". Let me know if you want a quote via PM.

You could port a single shallow mount 10 or 12 under there. Or two 10's or 12's sealed. Just no airspace for two ported unless you do 8's.

My personal opinion would be to go 10s over 12s. I have had both (not in a truck mind you) and by far the 10s are crisper and more enjoyable. I feel the 12s are great if you just want long and loud bass but if you truly want to enjoy the music and hear it hit all the notes go 10s.

not good to make a generic statement like that. it's akin to saying ported is better than sealed - generic statements that just are not true. i have a 12" sub in one of my vehicles and it is widely known as one of the best musical subs on the planet. you could easily build a system with a pair of 10s that could outperform a pair of 12s, and vice versa, it just depends on the equipment and more importantly the install.

I think it all really comes down to what type of sound the OP wants and what type of music they generally listen to. You mention the word "outperform" but that could mean something different to two different people. To you it might mean louder but to me it might mean cleaner sound. In my experience though a 10" sub generally speaking offers less muddy bass than a 12" and thus outperforms the sound I have gotten from the 12s.

outperform referred to just that - one performing better than another. i specifically did not specify sq or spl as that is dependent on a host of variables. much like vehicles subs are generally built for a reason - sq, spl, cheap sale, etc. and to get the most out of them, be it sq or spl, they need to be installed correctly. the "muddy" you referred to was most likely caused be either sub-par equipment or an improper install/setup. i could demo the same sub and amp combo for you in a box built to specs and then in a prefab off the shelf box and you would swear it was completely different gear. a lot of that false knowledge passed around the 'net people take to heart is just that - untrue.

for example i have a pair of jbl gto804 subs in two vehicles and for what they are - a cheap sub that can move a lot of air - they are great. they were $59 each brand new. for my applications they work great, but they are not installed in the vehicle i went all out for sq in. that one has an alto mobile falstaff 12. it can't hold a candle to the jbl 8s for spl but they can't come close to the sq it can produce. put either into the wrong box and they can sound like garbage.

to each their own. you know what they say - opinions are like arseholes - everyone has one and they all stink
