Hey guys. I am looking for the best way to install my Nexus 7 in my F150 while keeping the factory head unit. I can pair my nexus 7 and my galaxy s3 via bluetooth to the factory head unit and make calls with my phone and have media audio with my nexus 7. I can also tether my nexus 7 to my S3 so the nexus 7 will have internet access for streaming pandora, using google maps ect. I can do all this while maintaining the use of Ford Sync with my phone.

This is exactly what I am looking for from a functionality standpoint, my problem is coming up with an elegant mounting solution. The Nexus 7 fits perfectly over the factory stereo. While it does cover some of the controls, most of the controls can be done through the steering wheel or voice commands. I would like to mount it over the factory stereo and have a bezel around it to conceal the power cord going to the Nexus 7. It would be surface mounted on the existing stereo trim I assume but would like to trim it out nice so that it looks good.

I originally thought about just going with a mount like this.

I think it looks okay but then you are going to have the power cord in plain site which I don't think would look very good.

I would love to hear of any ideas you guys might have in helping me make this happen. I would love to come up with a good solution. Thanks.

Just get a Scosche or Metra dash kit, they are pretty cheap.

I have a Nexus 7 in the mail do to this same mod. Read every page in the massive thread Milt posted also.

I have read the thread. I am trying to do something a little different. I would like to make my Nexus easily removable. I am thinking about buying a factory dash kit, cutting it so the nexus fits behind it where the cd slot is and covering the hazards button. Somehow mount the nexus in a case to the existing factory stereo and use magnets to attach the dash face. You would then have access to the volume and tune buttons. The dash would stick out a bit but I think it would look nice and be removable.

For as much time and effort as you are going to put into doing that you could just buy two tablets and save yourself a lot of hassle. I don't know about you but my time is valuable. I'd just mount one and keep one for outside use. lol

Doing an in-dash drop in, slide in, or permanent installation does not mean sacrificing the radio controls, as I've learned. Do a YouTube search for F-150 Tablet install and there are some impressive installations for tablets of all sorts. To keep radio controls one resourceful chap extended the wire harness that connects to the back of the radio, trimmed the original panel, and put it in the glovebox if he needed them. Technically, with steering wheel controls, the only controls needed are the top series of buttons. For more info, check out Soundman Car Audio installations on YouTube.

Sorry I didn't go through the whole thread. But with Tmobile having their deal with 200mb of free data for life and a LTE nexus 7 tablet going for a little over 200 bucks right now, I think I'm gonna pull the trigger.

But has anyone brought up the wireless charging on the nexus 7? seems that would fix a lot of problems with the power cord. But I haven't done much research yet so I might be completely off base.

This is the one I used that way I can move my tablet out easily for updates and such. Then just use Bluetooth to connect and use Steering Wheel controls.
