Default Are some double-dins better for 1997-2003 F150s than others?

Hi All,

I've been reading about putting a double-din HU into a 1997-2003 F150. From what I gather dash cutting is unavoidable, so my question is whether there are any particular double-din head unit brands or models that work better for installing into those model year trucks?

Or perhaps the real question is whether there are certain install kits that should be used over others?

Finally, I'm looking at the JVC KWR800BT HU - any thoughts on this one (I'm on a budget)?

Thanks!

You can AVOID cutting into the dash...

Egg out the holes for the HVAC controls and drop it down until the letters hit the bottom of the dash trim. Cut the little bar out between controls and radio. Then install the deck.

I just installed a Pioneer AVIC-X940BT into my 03 SuperCrew. I used a Dremel tool to cut just the top portion of the opening. It's what most double-din installers do and it keeps the vent cover aligned with the openings. Get a Metra Kit 95-5818 which provides the wiring harness and surrounds for the opening. If you're going to replace the speakers, you need two packages of Metra Kit 72-5600.
