Welcome to the site! You can try changing the temperature sensor. There are two, one for the computer and one for the gauge. Change the one for the gauge. A mechanical temperature gauge will just screw into a water jacket and run to where the gauge will be mounted.

Temp gauge is pegged at high; locate the sending unit and disconnect the wire, what does the gauge do. The location of the sending unit is near where the top hose connects to the engine. Should be a single wire. can't ever remember if its grounded its hot or open its hot.

I'm pretty sure the sensor near the thermostat is for the computer. I looked at mine to try to find the other and it looked like it was the one in front of the distributor right next to where the coil mounts to the block.

Default gages

I found the heat sender .it's on the same side as the battery, you can't see it looking down at the motor or from the side, you can see it looking through the wheel well, anyway replace it and put new thermostat and heat gage still go;s all the way to the right.took the wire off the sender clean real good notice the gage when to the middle. put wire back on sender started the engine gage when back to the right.going to check all ground wires.might take off dash.to get to gage but before I do this what should I do next.thank everyone

All gauges get power at the instrument cluster, then they move by how much ground the sensor gives it. The wire to the sensor is ground, so it must be grounding out somewhere between the gauge and sensor.

the heat gauge works some what, after I took apart the dash to get to it.did a continuity test, tested ok clean all the dust off it put back in,it won;t go all to right now but right to the middle. ran the truck 30 miles gauge stay in the middle turn it off stay in the middle tap on the gage when to the left.should I be worry? did I fix this? is this normal? .cost of new gauge from ford 117$.really like to took up after market gauge to be on the safe side.thanks everyone.
