Switching from SUV to Truck
Hi everyone, my name is David, I'm 34 years young old (contact sports), and live in Colorado, Frisco. My most recent was an 07 4runner Limited 4x4 (v8) I had for about 6 years but was in an accident and the body shop is thinking its totaled. I loved it but it was underpowered even being a v8, got terrible gas mileage, and the interior felt like early 2000s. Now I'm in the market for a new vehicle (for me). I am single without kids and enjoy working on my vehicles (not a mechanic) which will play a bit of a role in my deciding what to buy. Thought I'd join here to get advice and ask questions before test driving. Thanks for reading.
The 2013 & 2014 model year F-150s are pretty easy for hobbyists to work on/upgrade and have a pretty good variety of quality aftermarket parts, although I am biased since I own a '13 myself.
I don't know about the V6 engines, but the 5.0 V8 can be reasonably expected to get 14 MPG city / 19 MPG highway. My truck has the 36-gallon fuel tank, which gives me great range.
For cab style, I personally prefer the SuperCrew (4 full size doors). If you rarely have passengers with you, a SuperCab ("half" back doors that open backwards and cannot be opened without opening front door first) may save you a few bucks.
In addition to cab style, another thing to consider is bed length. SuperCrews are commonly found with the short 5.5' bed, (some have the longer 6.5' bed, but not as many). The SuperCab often has the 6.5' bed (similarly, the 8' bed is an option for this cab but it is less common). I've got the 5.5' bed, and while it gets the job done, I will definitely get a longer bed whenever I get my next truck.
If you're looking for something newer I'm sure someone else will chime in.
