Sigh-ing over the 2000 era ford ranger
I'm in the market for a new truck. My ranger edge is 10 years old. It might last another 10 more years, but if might die sooner. So, I'm looking at replacements. Primary replacment option looks to be F150 I'm thinking about crew cab, though the extra $5grand is tough to swallow. I've looked for other compact trucks, but the tocoma engine, seemed 'loud', and didn't seem to have the get up and go, until you got high revs (stereotypical japanese motor, not 'truck like, in my opinion). I've looked at the tundra, again, it didn't seem to have the get up and go until you reved higher. The tundra also seemed 'wobbly' not firmly placed like my older 2000-ish series ford ranger. I know I have to expect some inertial behavior from larger trucks, but I didn't expect to have it on the tacoma as well. Granted, I believe the tacoma is 6 inches wider than my original ranger. I'm looking for replacement options. The tacoma didn't have a 'flat floor' behind the extended cab. I've seen the F150 crew cab, and while I can't rationalize needing it, I want it. I haven't gotten a chance to see if the 'extended cab', would actually be sufficient. I'm still trying to sort out what options to get (or at least look at). The STX looked pretty close to my old ranger. And I was pretty content with it. Though had to admit, I really wasn't geting anything I didn't already have in my old ranger (other than a bigger truck). Then I saw an XLT (again, about $5K more), and started to want those options. Just hard to swallow paying $35K+ (OTD) for a truck. 10 years ago, I was $17K OTD for my ranger.

Yeah, the Rangers were great little trucks. I've had several of them and they sure can take a beating, and be dependable. Sad day when Ford discontinued them domestically.

Welcome nethole.
I was in the same boat as you a while back. With kid #2 on the way, the '03 ranger wasn't going to have room for 2 car seats. I got into a '13 XLT 5.0 crew cab. Would have considered the STX, but they didn't make it in a crew cab in '13. Not sure about the 14's, but the 13's had a great loyalty rebate for Ranger owners, and the resale value was much better than I expected (I drove the Ranger for 10 years, stuck nothing into it for repairs, and sold it for $10k less than I bought it new...$1000 a year). The rebate made other makes overpriced. I didn't need the bigger truck either, but am finding the space useful, and gas mileage is the same or better than the old Danger Ranger. Good luck with your decisions. I was torn on what to buy but settled on the crew cab and really like it now.
Oh...and got into the 13 crew cab XLT for $30k after all the rebates (before ttl), so not as bad as you might think. Still a lot more to swallow than the $18 for the new FX4 Ranger, though...

This is your answer right here. You only live once. Get what you enjoy, even if it means spending some extra $$ & forget that rationalizing crap.
