Default No dash lights or engine light

I'm hoping someone can help me, I have a 1997 ford f150 that I just bought, When I went thru emissions it failed because the Engine light did not light up when the inspector turned the ignition on. Also my dash lights don't come on. Another problem I have is sometimes the blinkers work, then all of a sudden the blinkers & brake lights go out, then awhile later they come back on.. I checked this truck out prior to buying it and all the lights worked except the engine light and dash light that I didn't bother to check.
Anyone have any idea what could be the problem??

Welcome from SoCal. Try posting this under the Maintenance section for some replies. Start checking the fuses....

Default Dash lights & Engine light

Just got the truck out of the shop, the bulb to the engine light was burned out, it passed emissions. The mechanic said the bulbs for the dash light were fine, and he ran out of time to find out why the turn signals & brake lights work sometimes and sometimes they don't. I hope someone will have some information on that for me.

If you have a pull type headlight switch it controls the dash and dome light. I had a 97 & 99 'that part of the switch went bad and the dash lights and the marker lights would not work. Turn the switch off & on and sometimes they will work but then I replaced the switch and was good to go. Jim
