Hello all!
I joined the forum because I am interested in purchasing a 2004+ model F150. I do not know if I would like a regular cab or a s. cab, but I know it will be a 4x4.
I am most confused by trying to figure out what a stock truck would get for MPG. I understand there are many configurations and everyone does something different with their truck. But I plan to use it as a stock truck for moderate driving and hauling things when necessary. So I will usually be running on the highway with an empty bed and no trailer. I hear anything from 12 to 20 mpg.
4.6l or 5.4l? So much to choose.
I'll look around and see what others say about MPG.

First off, Welcome Aboard!
Here is my take on trucks... We do not buy them to save on gas.... 14-17 is a realistic average on city/hwy driving.
I would recommend at least a super cab with the 5.4L
I have owned single cabs and the 4.6L in the past and can say, the extra room and power will be used!!
Good luck!

Thanks for the input!
I am hearing that a lot lately (not for mpg!). Honestly, that's true. I have a Dodge stratus coupe that gets about 26-28mpg so that will be the daily driver.
My other vehicle is currently a 4 banger 01 Escape. I've put it through hell and it keeps going, but it would be nice to have something with much more hauling space than an SUV. Now that the Escape is hitting a consistent 20mpg (used to be more), I can give or take a little lower mpg.
Honestly, I can justify an F150 that gets 15-18mpg empty bed, but I'm not sure I could go to the 12-14mpg range and still drive it around as much as I would WANT to.
After spending a whole lot of time on the net last night, and on here, I believe I should look for a 5.4l with 3.73 gears and that should put me around 15-18 if I'm usually empty and not mashing the gas all the time.

Oh, and by 15-18, I mean that i usually drive 70% highway and 30% city. I am rarely in stop-and-go traffic. It's either interstate or country roads.

Scab or Screw with the 5.4 and 3.73's are the way to go. I've been getting 15 to 17 mpg with a 4x4 levevled and big tires so I'm satisfied. Just gotta drive the speed limit!! Welcome to the site.

The more I look, the more I think I would get the s. cab. I do not have a family to worry about hauling around, but the room would be nice. Thanks for the suggestions and all! I am still a little ways from an actual purchase but it's getting closer!!
Driving the speed limit is something I'll have to get use to though!
