Might be switching to Ford...
 

Hey folks, new guy here. I'm starting my research on F150 trucks and figured a forum is a good place to get real world info. I currently drive a 2011 GMC Sierra but I've recently been thinking of switching to an F150 of similar year and mileage.

My big debate right now is 5.0L or Ecoboost. LOL

I'll say this. Don't get the EcoBoost confused with a Prius.

To put it simple, the EB is a +6 liter engine when towing as in it pulls like a freight train but gets the same MPGs of a +6 liter too. When unloaded or just driving around empty its about the same as a 5.0 in MPGs.

Best to go test drive them and decide for yourself.


In the past week, I drove 5 half ton trucks:


2013 (used) Chevy Z71 double cab w/5.3 V8
2014 Chevy LT crew cab w/5.3 V8
2013 (new) Ford STX supercab w/5.0 V8
2014 Dodge Express quad cab w/5.7 V8
2014 Ford XLT Supercrew w/3.5 V6


I had my doubts about a 3.5 liter V6 in a half ton truck. Not only were my doubts immediately erased in the first 30 seconds of the test drive, but it was apparent the Ecoboost had much greater torque than the V8s, and the torque comes on quick at relatively low RPM. And it was more fun to drive. :)


I just took delivery of a new Ford this morning, with the Ecoboost. I live at high altitude and plan to tow a camper trailer to 9,000 ~ 10,000' elevation, so the greater torque and twin turbos will certainly be an advantage. Another deciding factor was availability of the electronic locking rear differential in the Ford.


I must admit the offerings by Chevy and Dodge were very nice trucks, but Ford had the edge.

My vote would be 6.2.

Welcome! I Traded my ex-wife in for my F150. I've never regretted it...Actually we where married by the mayor of Tijuana, so I'm not sure if the ceremony was legal in the US anyway....Additionally, I'm not sure he was the real Mayor. He gave us the key to the city as a wedding present & when the Versatel refused to dispense funds for some reason at 3AM on a Sunday, we tried to open the door of the Bank of Tijuana with our Key....Long story short, **** went south rather quickly. Thank God for Western Union Moneygrams & a corrupt/ understanding Judge with low overhead, which is why can be here now to tell this story about my truck.

The Raptor sure looked appealing to me... until I looked at the window sticker and nearly passed out. :)


There aren't many 6.2 V8s on the lots here in the Northern Rockies. From what the guys at my local Ford store say, the 3.5 Ecoboost is the hot seller. The turbocharger makes a world of difference at high elevation.

I do alot of long distance highway driving as well as a fair bit of gravel and backcountry roads for hunting and fishing. As for towing, not a whole lot right now but a trailer with a couple quads and a 16 - 20' boat (maybe 2000lbs tops) is in the not too distant future. That said, having tow power isn't a bad thing in case I ever need it.

I have been told the 5.0L get's better fuel economy around town, which naturally is the bulk of my driving but if it's a matter of a couple MPG that doesn't worry me too much. Would it be safe to say the Ecoboost does better on fuel when it comes to highway driving?
