F-150 troubleshooter challenge
I recently aquired have a 93 Ford F-150 - 4.9l 6 cyl - straight gear. The perfect truck for me.
Last week while driving along smoke started coming from under the dash and it cut-off, I drifted to the side of the road. No smoke from under the hood. I had to have it towed home and this weekend I started troubleshooting to see if I could locate the problem. The engine will turn over with the starter but it will not start. The fuel pump will not come on when the switch is turned on. I have looked extensively under the dash and can't find any sign of wire burn. I removed the entire instrument cluster and flipped it up on the dash - there was no sign of wire burn. I removed the fuse block on the D/S and pulled it out as far as I could, inspected the wiring as well as I could - no damage. I pulled out the head light switch and noticed that the coil for dash dimmer had come apart and hanging. There was discoloration from sparking I assume but thats all. I replaced the switch. I dont think this was the cause of the smoke because I have tried to crank since and get the same no fuel pump as before. Under the hood I have the "on all the time voltage" on both the ignition control relay and fuel pump relay. I jumped the fuel pump and it came on fine. I get 12 volts at the fuel pump relay when I turn the switch on but it does not time out like it should. I tried a new fuel pump relay with no luck. Anyway, I've reached my limit, any suggestions? |
