Default Did i make a HUGE mistake??

Hello, sorry for the long story
Thanks for having me. I will start of a little about myself. Ive been around the forum scene and have moderated a few. Currently i own a infinity G35 and I owed on my car about what it was worth. I needed a truck for my job because the G35 was not practical. So basically i was hunting around dealerships for trucks an making sure they would give me payoff on my car so i could break even. I was wanting a larait because i loved the options but was having trouble finding a dealer that would give me what i wanted for my car.

Now the fun begins...
I found a dealership in virginia (about 5hr away) that had a 2010 Ford f150 Platinum for 16.5k. That truck NADA values around 25k! Well i call the bank and they loan me enough against the truck to pay off my car free an clear AND pay for the truck. I was as skeptical as many of you would be an started firing questions. Did the truck run ok? Is there any kind of warranty? If there is do i have to take it to Virginia? They said the truck ran fine after they put a camshaft sensor and coil packs in it. It has a limited 3month 3k mile warranty on the drivetrain. I could take it to any certified mechanic to be worked on under the warranty. I was fine with all of this considering how low they were pricing the truck. I figured going in it wasn't going to be all peaches an cream an had a 1k bank to fix watever BS that may be wrong with it. Its still a great deal at that price.

Test drive
Upon inspection the truck was a little used an i knew it was a work truck. There was dirt in the engine bay an a dent in the tailgate (not a big deal). Mileage was 138000. Which is high for that year but still in reason of price. Interior looks pretty decent. No rips in leather navi, radio ect ect works great. i take the truck out for a drive. Runs great in the city but i noticed some misfiring when i stomped on it but nothing major. I chalk it up to needing a tune up because i seen in the engine bay they had replaced 4 of the coil packs an not the rest. Clean carfax. I purchase the truck an head out back to NC.

Drive home
Getting on the highway at decent speeds im noticing the misfiring again. After about an hour i go to stomp it in passing gear again an im getting a lot of shuddering an misfiring. Gas mileage back is pretty bad as well. Now the whole drive back it stays that way. Any stop i come to it idling really rough half the time an passing gear really bogs down. Sometimes i come to a stop an its idling fine. I still have it in my mind that i can fix this. Clean throttle body, replace coil packs an sparkplugs ect should take care of it. Im willing to invest a little in it for the price i got it at.

Back at NC
I take it first to my uncle who is more of an advanced mechanic than i am. Its running all kinds of rough now. Any stop it feels like its going to die but doesnt. Sounds like a deisel. I turn it off when i pull in to uncles house an have him get in to take a ride with me. (i called him on my way to his house an he was thinking coil packs). I start her up an it running REALLY rough. Rough enough to throw a check engine light. SCORE! (sorry i love it because now i have a code). Code comes back Camshaft sensor left an right bank an misfire. He feels i should take it directly to dealership to get diagnosed. I was personally going to give it a tune up an replace coil packs an sparkplugs an clean the throttle body. Should i just skip that an take it to dealership or try the quick fixes? Any feedback is welcome.

25k for 138,000 miles? Don't ever buy a vehicle thinking 'oh I can fix that later, it's nothing big'.

I did that once - never again. Hope it all gets sorted for you though.

I guess your question will be answered when you get the bill to fix it or find out what is wrong. I don't like spending big money(yes. to me 16.5 is big) on an unknown issue. Like the guy above said its an unknown variable. But those can save you a ton of money sometimes. Even with a new motor you still may be under Blue Book value or whatever so it should work out for you.

16.5k + 3.5k new engine = still under bbv but keep in mind that new stronger engine may wind up costing you a new transmission shortly there after. Figure in another 2k for that (rebuilt).

That puts you pretty close to book value, dealers are not stupid, they know exactly what they have to the dime.

You didn't make a great deal but you also didn't make a bad deal. Personally I would rather have a new vehicle at book value than something that's already used up, lots of other expensive items (electronic modules and such) can be about ready to throw in the towel sooner than later.

Update
Well i gambled an lost. Did some testing on the truck and everything pointed to new camshaft phasers an new solenoids. Cost was 1300. Tech got it in the back for a thorough inspection. Metal in the oil..
Time for a new motor!
Im not super mad though. I love the truck despite her problems. It has more bells an whistles than my g35 lol. I WILL REBUILD HER! LOL
