Central Florida!!
Howdy everyone!
Well, I took the plunge the other day and purchased my very first truck. I answered a Craigslist ad for a red 2001 F-150XLT mechanics special, 167K miles. Turns out the truck was in fair mechanical shape as far as the base drivetrain, paint's got a few scratches and there's some minor body dings but nothing that's too obtrusive. It's set up with a heavy-duty hitch and plugs for two different trailer light types so it's meant to tow.
The problems.... the AC was out due to a bad compressor & leaking hose along with a bad resistor block, heater core was shot & leaking out the condensate drain, exhaust was cut off halfway down the body, headlights are so dull I can see better going down the road at night with a flashlight, the cruise control is dead as hell and the lower RF fender right at the turn of the body is dished in due to an encounter with a parking bollard. But, I walked away with the truck for $1,400 so I can't complain too badly.
So, after a day or two of work, the AC is fixed and putting out arctic-level cold with a new resistor block so the fan can be controlled, the exhaust is now re-done with a new Flowmaster and duals back to the rear, and the heater core is bypassed until I can stomach pulling the dash & doing the deed (doesn't get that cold down here). New headlights are on-order and will be in next week.
Next step is the cab cleanup from years of scunge, re-upohlstering the driver's seat (age split in the middle - it's the nice 8-way power cloth bucket so I'll just re-cover it), fixing the cruise control (betting it's either the cutoff switch or a bad steering wheel control), installing the new headlights, and finding a replacement for the front fender. Then... the mods can start
I'm no stranger to Ford, I've been through three different versions of police Crown Vics and one Mercury Mountaineer over the years but this is my first no-sh*t truck. Finally something I can haul with!
I'm in Central Florida east of Orlando by the Space Center. If there's any Brevard people out there yell!
Thanks
Eric
