Time for a good detail
Ok guys, I have a 2010 lariat with tricoat metalic. I I'll be purchasing a PC polisher soon. I've used a cheap 10" for to long now. But I am wondering what kind of products you guys find best on this paint. I'm looking into a decent polish. Their are so many options and don't know where to start. My steps are as follows..
-Was with dawn to strip
-iron-x (white truck shows a lot of rail dust)
-Polish with orange pad and final polish with white pad
-wax
Am I missing something and any suggestions on decent products help.

Meguiars Ultimate Compound for the new hobbyist. It's more of a stout polish vice a true compound and a great one-step product for some correction and prep for a wax/sealant vice a more aggressive compound that would require a polish afterward.
LOTS of great stuff out there but for someone just getting started, it is a really good one.
Another method would be to clay the car, and follow with Blackfire Total Polish and Seal. I can't shut up about the stuff. You can follow with Crystal Seal (wipe on walk away) to really top it off. This is my personal summer regiment for a last step product.....I go with Colonite 845 for a winter last step product.

Might as well wait until you get the PC. No time like the present.
Don't bother with Dawn. It doesn't work. Ford also specifically says not to use dishwater soap.
The detergent might temporarily break down the surface tension, so you don't see beading, but it doesn't work with a decent wax or sealant underneath. Get a proper car shampoo. You can probably get a Duragloss product at Carquest. Or maybe Meguires. The Iron-x and a claying will do the rest.
You can get a claybar any old place these days, even K-mart. I think its worth doing that. Not nearly the ordeal people make it out to be if the paint is already in good condition.
If you don't have the PC by all means get the Collinite 845. Or, if your Carquest has it, the two part Duragloss products. If you do have the dual action polisher in hand, get the Collinite 476 (Same stuff only in paste wax form). Paste wax is actually easier to use with a DA. You might want to be a sport and get the Collinite 915.
Get a microfiber mitt, grit guards and a waffle weave towel (or two--its a truck) at Pep Boys.

I also recommend that you checkout Meguair's Forum and Detailing 101>5 Step Paint Care Process video. You could probably find this same video on youtube as well. You'll learn a lot about the proper way to detail your truck and get great results.
