No signature showing for my last post.

This post has “show signature” box checked.

Signatures don't show on posts made through the mobile template--which is why it only shows on post 26 made through the desktop mode.

The signature page says 2K plain visible characters (excluding HTML), and 5 lines (after implicit wrapping). My signature is about 394 visible characters (there is no counter on the page - I had to go to ebay's contact page to get that number) and wraps to ~2.5 lines (as you can see; the first line includes a carriage return). But I had to edit it about 30x to find the max. length that the system would accept because it DOESN'T accept what it claims to. Can we get that fixed?

I don't think the fault is in the system but is due to variances as well as a little more complicated signature you're using with embedded links.

The 2000 character figure includes BB Code. HTML is not allowed in signatures (or messages) on F150 and just about any other similar site due to security. Instead, BB Code is used to define safe HTML. Per the settings, a signature for Registered members can be 2000 in character length (which includes BB Code) or 500 in character length which excludes BB code. Also, 5 lines are the maximum.

These are rough guides.

Per the core software for the line limitation:
This is the maximum number of lines users of this group may have in their signatures. Unfortunately, due to browser and style variations, this is not an exact science and should only be used as a rough guide.

Soft linewrapping can cause one contiguous string of text to be counted as multiple lines. The number of characters that are allowed before this text is treated as multiple lines is controlled by the Signature Soft-Linebreak Character Limit option. Text that is not the default size is scaled to count as more or less characters than normal.
The above soft-linebreak character limit is set at 90.

Per the maximum character excluding markup:
This is the maximum number of characters users in this group may place in their signatures, not including any BB code used to format the signature. In most cases, this is very close to the number of displayable characters in the signature.
Again, due to your more complicated signature with embedded links and due to variances, it's not an exact figure but a rough guideline and takes some experimenting.

Thanks for the quick response.

If you think about that, it's contradictory. There's no way to have 500 characters in 5 lines of 90 characters each. That's only 450 characters.

Does the soft-linebreak limit apply to BBcode? If so, it's impossible to have 450 characters showing, if ANY BBcode is used because the non-visible BBcode will consume the linebreaks. If BBcode does NOT count in the soft-linebreak limit, my signature still shouldn't approach the limit. It's nowhere near 2K characters, even with all the BBcode.

So can we get a user-visible character counter in the signature text field? And in any other fields where characters are counted? I assume that would be pretty easy to add, but that's just a guess.

And can we get a user-visible preview that shows the layout that the core software is using to analyze the linebreaks & character counts? That way, users can decide how they want to "spend" those 500 (or 450) spaces: either on standard-size text, or oversize that counts as more characters. I realize that's going to take more effort to add, but it would be really helpful to be able to see what matters, in order to fully-utilize the forum's features.

Thanks.

I'm not sure who set the figures in the settings for F150 but they are customizable so they may not add up.

I can pass the idea onto the team. The option doesn't exist within the core software. Re-writing the core software or adding plugins is not trivial when security, stability and scalable are things that must be considered with large and active sites. While the counter itself may be possible in a future update, in my view, I think analyzing and breaking down how the signature is calculated against the limit in real-time may take it a bit too far in practicality just for the few cases using an advanced signature and trying to squeeze all available space. Given the fact there will be some variances out of control, doing so can lead to more problems. At the end, the figures are guidelines used to help keep signatures in check as the main goal.
