No Pain, No Pain!
The handbook for my 1996 F150 4x4 E4OD automatic transmission says that you are okay to tow in O/D, but for the manual transmission trucks, they say not to tow in 5th gear. Last year, I towed a 3,000lb camping trailer from Connecticut to the Eastern Shore of Maryland and kept her in O/D for most of the way to get the best gas mileage I could. I would take the O/D off if I knew I was coming up to a steep uphill climb, so the transmission wouldn't "hunt" for the gears. I had no problems towing the trailer and the transmission is still running strong.

It is better to pay a higher gas bill than to buy a new tranny. If the "gear searching" is taking place you need to leave the OD off. Any time I have large loads or have pulled anything of size I leave it off, especially through hills.

thats what i thought cos with it on you can def feel it working way to hard and it tends to wind out in the wrong gear once i turned it off it was like a whole new ball game
