I have driven all 3 over the years, 1960 chevy 1qt oil every 300 miles, had to completly rewire from cab back to get tail/brake lights approx 70,000 miles when sold 1966 dodge 3/4 ton, heavy built truck, super gas hog, only truck I ever replaced a transmission in. 1966 chevy 1/2 ton really good truck good mileage no real problems. 1974 chevy 1/2 ton, gas hog 10mpg at best, replaced voltage regulater in alternator about every 6 months. Amp gauge never worked even when new. I always thought it was funny that if you mentioned to a salesman the problems you had with a prior generation truck their standard reply was always "we are better now" . My brother-in-law always drove gm. He went through 8 transmissions in 3 pickups. My recent history 1986 Ranger 4x4 traded at 200,000 ,replaced computer once. 1990 f150 4x4 351 sold at 177,000 miles; 2 power window motors, 1 electric door lock, ball joints around 120,000 alternator and starter around 150,000. 2000 f150 7700 traded for 2009 f150 at 161000, replaced starter and alternator around 110,000.
If you are looking for an older pickup, try for one with a 351, more power and a great engine. Actually beat the 302 for gas mileage. Good luck in your purchase

The difference between my brother-in-laws 90 chevy and my 90 ford (both were 4x4) was:
Ford : ball joints, alternator, starter,2 power window motors, 1 power door lock, brakes, rear u-joint, 177,000 miles.
Chevy: 3 transmissions, transfer case, replaced motor(350) alternator, waterpump, radiator, 200,000 miles. Don't think my ford could have gone through that many transmissions ect in 23,000 miles. Ford power trains definately better.

I think everyone here agrees it is a pretty good indicator though. I would trust that fact over most of the opinions on any site.
A lot of people on forums like these have good facts as well, but they can only relate to what they know with the limited amount of vehicles they have had experience with. At least with the knowledge that the F-150 has been the best seller for 30+ years you know you are getting an opinion from a huge group of people, and that definitely counts for something.

All brands are great when they run, and pieces of chit when they don't.

They all have their good points, and bad. Do your research, and choose what brand suits you the best. That's why I went with a Supercrew with a 5.5' bed.I wanted a truck that was huge inside, mid size v8, and didn't need much of a bed as I don't do much hauling. It fit's my needs perfect.

On a Ford board you will get "Fords are the best", Chevy boards will tell you the Chevy is best.

I'm not brand loyal to any, I have had all three of the American made trucks. Right now I have the F150, and it's currently my favorite.

Gid day all
The reason I've bought a ninth gen F150? Because the first time I saw one in Haarlem, were I use to live, I felt in love with the model. I think Ford is very distinctive with the shape of the mudguards; the're radius are following the tires. compare to Dodge an Chevy, because they do have a brute look IMO.. I love the straightforward look, the square hoodshape and... I've had 5 Ford's before and Ford was a familiar make in the family for decades!
The choice of reliability? The E4OD is not the best, but my God! The sound of a 9th GEN!!! Goosebums!!

Time to hit the sack here (1100PM)

you have to remember when your looking for an older truck, ford chevy dodge whatever, you have to make sure it was taken care of and a street queen because if someone was mudding it and all that then it'll be all rusty under fenders and everything and your front end will most likely be falling apart, mostly because of all the rubber stuff that dry rots and wears out, i.e. ball joints, tie rods, and such. And believe me if your a beginner then the ball joints aren't very easy to do if your doing em for the first time. especially on a 4x4 w/ manual hubs.

now after that, like previously stated, dodges are gas hogs and the trannys suck.

chevys, older chevys just aint my thing, i think the fords look better and aint had much experience with em, but my grandad has an 89 chevy 1500 with the I6 and its only got like 90k miles and already got a misfire in the engine and the transmission is locked up. its my grandad, you know how old people drive and he sure as hell takes good care of it, routine fluid changes and such.

have two buddies both have 96 ext cab short bed dodges with the.. 5.9L i think? the magnum engine whatever that is, both had to have tranny rebuild before 100k and one of em had to have his injectors or somthin like that replaced, also had to redo the whole brake system because the brakes locked up, can't go into detail because i don't know exactly what the problems were.

my other grandad has owned nothing but fords and only thing thats gone wrong with any of em, is starter in his 01 and in his 84.. oh i wish you could see what the 84 has been through.. but you wouldn't even believe me if i told you. it has herded cattle in fields, and when he gets mad enough he just runs over em, and it has literally ran all the way over a full grown cow, multiple times, and other than some minor (extreme) cosmetic damage, he's had to replace a spring in his carb or somthin like that and i replaced his fuel pump. pretty sure those are the only things that have ever gone wrong, with those two trucks at least.

hope this helps.
