Hello,

I bought a 2012 XLT 2wd 3.7l supercab back in 2012 and it's been a fabulous vehicle ever since. The problem is that in late 2014 (well...new year's eve actually) I bought a Focus ST and have been driving it pretty much exclusively since. I love my truck but it's just not getting used and between the insurance, the depreciation, and just looking at it sitting there all sad is pretty much all I can take. I'm thinking about selling it...my question is...what's the best way? It's got under 30K miles, it's lived as a grocery getter, never towed anything, no smoking, in great shape, lifetime mileage is just over 20mpg so it's lived an easy life. It hasn't even seen snow since spring 2014. I'd like to get a fair price for it but I'm not exactly the best negotiator when it comes to selling LOL. What's the best way to go? I've always traded in for something new but with the focus I'm kinda set for a vehicle for now. Thanks

Print carfax, collect any services records, check nada values and what others are asking on autotrader etc, get good pictures, and post them on here and Craigslist In your area. Someone should bite.

Take it by Carmax for an offer. It costs nothing, and it gives a good baseline.

Kelly Blue Book has an option where you can sell your car for cash. You go to their site and then put in your information. They make an offer and you just take it to a local dealer they have a contract with.

I have played with it a few times and honestly, the price is pretty decent--seems to be the low end of trade value.

You may able to sell it to a private party for a few thousand more but you need to know what you are doing so you cannot be scammed.

You may think trade-in value varies, but in real life and dealing with honest-to-goodness dealers, trade-in won't vary more than a couple hundred dollars max- provided they are all bidding on the same deal. What I mean is: dealer A says 20k as it sits. @ dealer B, you say: "I'll be taking off the Bakflip tonneau before I trade it", and B offers 19.5k- different deal. Quite honestly, why not pull the insurance and plates, and park it in the back yard till fall- or when you need it again? You know it's gonna happen. Not to mention the current generation of F150's don't seem to built as well as the last one was. I'm sure that will change as this design matures, but the prices are going thru the roof as well, so when you get around to replacing it someday- it'll cost you an arm and a leg!

Privately, if you trade in, they will either low ball you or have the vehicle you buy higher priced.

You also typically get a trade in credit....when buying a new one. Also, of course they lowball you. The intent is for them to turn it around and sell it while making a few bucks in the process. No different than any other business you sell goods to. You lose because you're paying for the simplicity of the dealer taking it.

When selling privately, meet at the buyer's bank. Go in, have them withdraw funds and have teller give seller cashier's check. Then sign title over, and go to your bank with check.

Pictures are key IMO. Don't touch them up with fancy filters; just makes people think you're trying to hide blemishes. Just straight forward pictures; inside, outside, engine, all 4 wheels and any fancy features.

Craigslist would be the way to go, it's free and you can have folks e-mail you so you're not giving out your number to SPAM callers.

Don't over price it. It's way too easy for folks to do exactly as you could do to get values. Do you have a lot of aftermarket items on it? I'd add up what they cost new (now, not when you bought them) and then add 60% of that value onto the fair asking price.

Be thorough in your add. I skip over the ones that lack information.

I'd probably skip the CarFax AutoCheck report, but that's only because I've been tainted by an incorrect one and have come to realize those companies get their info from police reports, so things like deer hits, single car accidents, damaged repaired out of pocket etc. don't show up on them. If someone is keen to see one, you can often find a way to get a free AutoCheck.
