What would you do? Cam phaser or new motor
One week ago I brought a 2008 f 150 lariat with 99,000 miles from a private owner!!! Guy was selling it for 10,000 I got it for 9,250 truck retails for about 16,000... So I got truck home was gonna check oil the dip stick wouldn't come out..So next day I took it to my local garage to have it serviced and also got new tires on it....Find out the guy didn't change oil in the 5 years he had it oil was almost like a glue...all he did was put oil additives in oil... Once I got truck back everything has changed when I drive it in town it shakes runs rough sounds just like a diesel if not worse..Took it back to shop to see what they thought it was...3 of 5 guys said it's cam phasers and they have seen it before....gave me some options buy a used motor and maybe be 10 times worse then motor in truck...2nd choice was to buy a brand new motor from ford ....I went with a brand new motor from ford...

I just put a new engine (long block) in my 09. The first one lasted 150,000 miles. By the way they are re-manufactured, not brand new. The bottom line is the cam phasers are being starved for oil along with the timing chain tensioners. In my case the hydraulic timing chain tensioner didn't do it's job as the oil passage to it was restricted. Timing chain was loose and the engine jumped time. Made a big mess. I spent a little extra money and purchased the Ford supplied engine. There are many other re-manufactures out there that supply quality long blocks, but there is such a high demand for this engine there is a 3-4 week wait to get one. I just couldn't wait that long.

I really wonder how hard it'd be to take the timing cover and tensioners off and clean those passages out. Not knowing how they're routed, I wonder if something as simple as a pipe cleaner could be used.
