On every truck I buy, the first things that I install (pretty much immediately) are the BedRug mat and a tonneau cover. On the latter, I've now purchased several RetraxPRO MX retractable covers - best for security and protecting cargo from the elements. I've only deviated once from it in my last few trucks, and that was for an ARE Z-Series topper on my F350 (needed the because the 100# GSD's cage was back there for trips up north).
A tonneau cover seems like a waste or time to me. I've put a cap on all of my trucks since the 1970's. I like a bed mat better than a bed liner and I usually upgrade to better, slightly larger tires. Factory wheels are fine for me. I'll probably never own another truck without a winch. I'm getting too old to get them out the hard way.

Edit: Why: I need the ability to put more "stuff" in the truck, without being totally exposed to the elements. A good tonneau keeps nearly all water out, and what little might get in, is a seep into known areas such that you can easily keep a lot of 'stuff' in the bed dry. And out of sight. And not flying away. Stuff with fumes not suitable to the cab, or cab is filled with people/dogs.
I had a rental for a week and the totally naked bed was a PITA because it rained the whole week, I would have been better off with a Focus than the rental truck.
