What model year, motor, and mileage for under $5000?

What exactly is standard towing vs. max towing?
Also, assuming one of the v8 motors, 97-03, what mileage would be reasonable to buy? For example, a $2500 '97 with 200k miles, minimal rocker rust, runs good - worth it or too high miles?

I know you asked about an F150, but have you considered an early 2000's Silverado with the 5.3 V8? That is a bullet proof motor, even die hard Ford guys can admit that.
If you're only looking at F150's, the 97-03(?) 5.4 is a decent truck. My buddy has a 97' stepside Lariat with the 5.4 and it's been a pretty solid truck, especially considering how bad the first 100k miles was for maintenance. It has 250k on it now, still original motor.
