Default What happened to some of you guys?? Rant

What happened to the DIY attitude of car guys, especially you truck guys? I read a trans fluid change thread and couldn't count all the replies of take it to the dealer, its too hard and all kinds of whiney crap like that!

Maybe its just people on forums? Maybe its just the young ones?

Can't be, I know some guys on forums that will tackle anything and young guys who will spend more doing it themselves than they would taking it it just to learn something.

Oh my driveway will get dirty!

I don't want to lay on the hard ground!

Panzies, all the real guys must be in the service.

I tackle almost every repair my truck needs. We just got a new ford rep and she is very active on the forum. But if the vehicle is under warranty, why not have the dealer fix it? Mine is waaaaaay out of warranty but havent had any major issues yet.

There are sill plenty of DIY'ers out there, I dont think we are a dying breed at all. This forum is the worst one Im on though for the dealership cowboys though, at least just from reading. Id say its the older folks that are paying the dealerships to do things more than the younger crowd. I moderate a Ranger forum who's memberships average age is probably 10 years younger than this one and its full of build threads and how to write-ups. Id bet most younger folks DIY more from necessity than laziness, I know when I was 16 years old and I broke my truck my minimum wage job wasnt going to fund me bringing my old beater truck to the dealership for repair, I learned to turn a wrench. Its become a valuable skill for me over the years, saved me many thousands of dollars fixing my own stuff. Once Im to the age that I no longer appreciate the satisfaction I get from tackling a repair on my own and I have more disposable income I can see myself paying someone else to do it.

Some people have it......and some don't. I enjoy working on my stuff although irritating at times, it gets done.

I can pay someone to do my work too, Thats not the point, thats not what motorheads do! I have 4 vehicles of my own and my wife has one. Granted two of mine are toys but I do all my own work. Why, because I trust me.

I know the time comes to hang up the wrenches. I know sometimes its easier to pay someone but I just expected more "how to" threads and fewer "which air freshener do you like" threads

I owned a 1998 Ranger before my 2013 F150 and I did all the repair work like oil changes, brakes, brake lines, starter, spark plugs, suspension work, body work, various valves and sensors etc. Now with my new truck I take it to the dealer for warranty purposes but once it is out of warranty all the work ill do myself unless I absolutely need to take it to a shop.
