I drove a Highlander hybrid for years and loved getting 26mpg. My wife drives a Fusion hybrid and it has a 38mpg average over the 4 years we've had it from new. The Highlander was all wheel drive with a hybrid V6 that would lend itself well to a pickup body. I've never understood why there are no minivan or pickup hybrids. Don't families and working guys deserve good gas mileage? Just because gas is under $3 a gallon doesn't mean you should buy more just because.. just because. Most of the time a pickup is driven empty, as my Highlander was. Once you load it down a V6 hybrid drive will pull a lot of weight. Just seems a bit shortsighted to me. What family of 5 or 6 in a minivan wouldn't appreciate 30mpg over 18 or 20? Ford could have taken the Escape SUV drivetrain and made a hybrid version of the Ranger and the Fusion drivetrain could be used in a minivan. But no, we don't need to get that much mileage in a pickup or a minivan. I like my truck, when you need one nothing else will do. But all other things being equal (I know, all other things are never equal), I wouldn't turn down a truck that got 30mpg for one that got 18 just because gas was cheaper, heck gas is still over $2 a gallon (except in OKC) which ain't cheap to a lot of us.
