My 06 is definitely reliable, but in stock form, its pathetic when it comes to power. Embarrassing when you put an exhaust and people hear when you're trying to accelerate but you aint really getting anywhere, lol. I've added an S&B CAI, glasspack, SCT programmer with a 91 per tune from 5star and it's "ok" now but that's about it. Hopefully more mods will bring it to life.

The 4.6 is a very reliable engine. It comes 2 ways, as a 2 valve and as a 3 valve. The 2 valve puts out about 250 horsepower and the 3 valve has 292 horses I think. Neither one is going to be real fast, but both are good engines. If you look under the engine and drivetrain section you can get an idea about how many problems each has.

How are you able to tell again if you have a 2v or 3v?? Something bout the year they were made I think.

But very true about being reliable. My truck might be slow, even with mods, but I have it looking good imo, and it hasnt giving me any trouble in the 3yrs I've had it. *knocks on wood*

yeah I'm probably going to run a lift and bigger tires, I'm just going to look for a good deal I like power though so i would probably go for a 07-08 5.4 since they resolved most of the problems or an 04-05 4.6

I've owned four 4.6L vehicles. Never had a major problem with either. Not a powerhouse by no means, but gets the job done nonetheless. With the mods your wanting I would suggest to not worry about gas mileage. Those mods are killers for mpg's. But hey, don't matter, it's a truck. Good luck on your search.

Since you have an 06 you have a 2 valve. Which also means you have a 4 speed transmission. The 4.6 2 valves are rated at 248hp and 294ft lbs whereas the 4.6 3 valve's are rated at 292hp and 320ft lbs. Plus as stated all 4.6 3 valves will have a 6 speed transmission

IF your going with that body style/year I'd recommend the 5.4

"There's no replacement for displacement", that being said, our worktrucks are E350 cutaways with "dogcatcher boxes", the 2V 4.6 with 4 speeds were dogs, the 3V with the 6 Speed are way better, now we can actually merge onto the freeway
