My guess is it was for a remote control so the rear passengers could control the volume.

I took my time and let it cure over night. Also, I put some old socks under them when I flipped the over to get the bottoms. That way the dip coating doesn't get messed up. It turned out better than I had hoped. I posted the after picture and I hope to see yours when you finish.
